Hard start even with new injectors, injection pump and glow plugs...help

Lets see: 1. Varying pressure at the IP inlet affects timing. It really does. The ford mechanical pump, for me, was pushing 3-4 PSI from the outlet of the filter, from idle to WOT at max RPM. Excellent stability. 2. Cold advance helps, especially with a relatively retarded timing setup. Some...

    84 6.9 help

Erm... check your fuel shut off wire. That's the most likely case, you've got the fuel shut off and cold advance wires swapped. IPs don't fail that way - if it will start cold, it isn't going to die when warm. It may not start when the IP is too hot(heat soaked), but it will never die on you...

    Backup lights

I found some drop in LED replacement bulbs for the stock light assembly; they are about 2x as bright. Like $10 on Ebay, and have survived a year+. I need to look into more.

When your PS pump siezes up 50 miles from home...

^^ Yup. BTW, just in case anyone is curious, I just swapped in a 'new' pump. The pump I used was one off of a V-belt truck of some sort which had evidently gotten whacked a bit there - the bracket was broken in two and the pulley was bent. So, old V-belt pulley came off, pump removed from old...

When your PS pump siezes up 50 miles from home...

Oh, it definitely needed replacing soon - It had been intermittantly making lots of C2 whining noise and intermittant stiffness when turning for the past couple of weeks. I actually had a pully remover in the truck with me for exactly that reason. Plenty of fluid in it, surprisingly; this setup...

When your PS pump siezes up 50 miles from home...

I'm seriously considering it. Only thing I'll have to rig up is an old style AC compressor to the newer truck. I think it may just need some lines from a donor truck. I like the older style compressors better anyway - they seem a lot more reliable. Also have to rig up a 3G alt(have one that...

When your PS pump siezes up 50 miles from home...

I used a 104.5" belt for this: Note that the fan being missing is important if you have to do this. The waterpump is being run backwards, so the fan will try to push air backwards and you will basically have very little water pumping... Gets really hot easily with the fan in place. Remove the...

    North Idaho IDI parts

What sort of skills do you have, what sort of job do you want to get? OK. Will do, but be patient please. I'm a little behind; my IDI parts are up at my property(not where I'm currently living), and I have to get up there and see. (Also, I have to replace my PS pump in the '93 before I go to...

    North Idaho IDI parts

You mean like a F-350 front driveshaft? The F-250 and F-350 t-cases are different, and yes, the yokes are as well. I may, on a T-case. I'll have to see. Nice! I go down there about 1-2 times a month(to go to Costco and such).

Got an IDI van Saginaw pump!

I'll see what I can find, tomorrow after work.

    Engine Removal Q&A

But, what it will do is isolate the problem. It will immediately tell you if it's the pump(at which point you can return/repair/replace it), or not. If you don't have another pump handy to try, IMHO it's a good test/bandaid fix. Also, I'm not sure if it's typical to see the cam stuck in...

    Let’s talk fan clutch

Also, if you can find one off a IDIT(or IDIT spec), they lock in at a lower temp than the NA ones were designed to. I've gotten ahold of a couple of those and was amazed when it happened - it was locking in around 212F, vs 225-230F for me.

    Promise... the build

Changing the timing is always worth a shot ; even if you end up really advanced or retarded, it will tell you quite a bit in how it runs at these extremes.

    Engine Removal Q&A

One thing you can do is play with the timing - push in the advance lever on the side of the IP at idle. That will retard the timing. If it makes it much much worse, OK, you know you need some timing advance. The workaround I like to do in this situation is to skip the IP gear one tooth "ahead"...

    Engine Removal Q&A

Sounds like your IP/injectors. It would do it worse when warmed up because the cold advance would turn off. Less advance = poor running, because the fuel is injected way too late. Usually when you get to this point, the IP is very worn. Needs at least 6 degrees of advance to get back to...

    Towing issues?

BTW: https://official.bankspower.com/magazine/tow-test-ford-f-350-diesel-stock-vs-turbo/ Just found this: I thought it might be a good datapoint. I know with my stick I'm always in the highest gear I can hold and am not maxing out the engine(have more power if I give it more throttle). Usually...

Do front and rear main seals, you'll be close anyway. Probably re-seal the oil pan as well.

    18.4 MPG!

I'm averaging, these days about 14-15 tank-to-tank. Lots of 10-mile cold trips hurt the mileage, longer trips unloaded help. This is with 4x4, worn IDIT, stock IP cranked to the moon, Factory turbo, 4.10s ZF5, GV OD. Weight around 6600lbs. Speeds usually 64 to 75 on the highway(depending on...

    brake ignorance question

That's not a proportioning valve, it's a residual pressure valve - basically, drum brakes need to have a little pressure even when your foot is off the pedal, so they don't collapse too far. Disc brakes don't need any pressure. So, a disc-drum setup will have a residual pressure valve on the...

Why does my truck emit an odor when making a turn

It's going to be under the hood, look on the passenger's side(because that's where the cabin intake air comes from)..

    brake ignorance question

I think the proportioning valve was only used on earlier models, to reduce the amount applied to the rear brakes when unloaded(to prevent locking up the rear tires). My 88s and later(with rear ABS) do not have the valve. If you reinstalled it, you could probably get it to do what it was...

F-350. IDI Centurion Bricknose In Tacoma

I'd pick it up if I could do it. I just don't have the time to drive over there and back right now. Do it, and if it turns out you don't want it, I'd buy it off you when I can schedule the trip over there.

    Troubleshooting PCM - 97 F-250 cali emissions.

So, followup: Contact edge. They ask for model year etc. After they hear it's a '97 cali truck, they go "Oh, yeah, we have issues with that". They ask for the code on the computer itself. Once provided with the part codes, Edge ships out a "tune to stock"-programmed computer. We had to try it a...
