    My 1990 zf5 s42 does not have the bolt on tube. My 1996 zf5 s47 has the bolt on tube. I allways thought the bolt on version was a redesign when the s47 transmission came out.

    Just a thought and I apologize if this has already been covered But looking at a diagram of the gear train there are 2 timing marks on the middle gear, one for the crank and one for the pump. You could be 180 degrees out if you aligned to the wrong one.

    Mine is 2wd . When I converted from auto to 5 speed I used the 4wd version for the ability to have low range. Even though I have no plans to make the truck 4 wheel drive.
