Pull the oil drain plug and see what comes out. You can unthread it and hold it against the pan. You should not loose that much oil and water will come out first if there.

I think what they were trying to tell you is to make sure the push rod is not bottomed in the lifter. You would not want to be so tight as to hold the valve open.
That was the reason I asked about grounds as many assume that the ground system is good when often it is not. Easy enough to run some voltage drop test to determind what may or may not be an issue.
