Doesn't the 460 gas version ZF5 have a lower first / reverse ratio? And, won't those gear sets work in the Diesel version?

I forget which data plate # is which is it the 42 Diesel?

My solution? Get a 4x4(if you don't already have one).
4x4 low range works wonders as being just a low range if you leave the hubs unlocked.

You could also do this on a 2x4 truck, if you just swapped in a 4x4 tranny and transfer case with no front shaft - you'd have a high/low range for whatever you need.

why would you want to get rid of the "high gear reverse? I put a 460 zf5 in my idi truck, runs great except that 1st gear isnt really useful for normal around town driving, but the idi has enough low end torque to launch in 2nd easily.

The issue is not torque, or lack of it. The issue is being able to creep into position in reverse, like when you are hooking up a trailer or parking one. The lower reverse ratio lets you "walk" the truck into position easier. rather that big jerks and lurches.

Even with the diesel ratio ZF5, I very rarely use 1st in traffic unless I'm pulling a load. [or pushing a Prius into the ditch to get it out of my way. ;)) ]

I would go as low as you could. I tow with my zf6 and with my large goosneck I’m always starting in first. A lot of times I’m so heavy I use granny low a lot.

I got a Zf5 but 4.56 gears front and back... It's LOW. Even when I'm towing decently heavy, I don't consistently use first gear.
