Hey I've got a starter that spins great, but doesn't work. It will click. It's not the fender solenoid, because the backup starter works flawless.

Does anyone change just the solenoid on the starter? It appears to be the SS331 solenoid. Solenoids like 38bucks. New starter is like $110. so enough of a delta to fix an old starter, but if it's typically short lived then I'll just round up a new starter. Probably the $150 4KW unit Russ talks about.

I have done this in the past, but that is when we made good auto parts. Do it.

Its the contact in the solenoid thats likely burnt up

Ifnu can dissassemble it and flip it 180 deg....free fix likely.....

ive pulled starters, and tried replacing the solenoid before.
but ive always done so, just to have the starter die completely.
now a days i just buy a new starter with a 3 year warranty, and make sure it breaks before the 3rd year.

I had one I completely rebuilt. The new Solenoid came out of China. Worked good for a few months.
But if a $40 bucks is enough to get you by for a few months until you can replace the whole thing, by all means.

Yea my brother in law ran into this. His expensive starter rebuild died in my driveway within a couple weeks. It was the solenoid on top. I pulled one off an old spare and he ran it until he sold the truck years later.

Try tapping it with a hammer then check the solder on the wire connecting it. Otherwise, in most of the cases I've been in time equals money so we just replaced them. That said, I used to fix old VW starters and it was pretty simple. Generally the windings are about shot when you get to that point however.
