so i had to pull my intake manifold to replace my intake gaskets because they went bad, anyhow, first thing i noticed once i got it off was on the top of block it is stamped 289, and i thought i had a 302. now how would i tell what heads it has? pretty sure i gotta pull a valve cover. has anyone heard of ford making a 302 out of a 289 block? cause im pretty sure it is all factory done.

Heads should be stamped.
Be at the middle of the head, under the cover.
Could just be a 289 or 289 block with 302 heads.

update on this old thread, my starter went out today and my block was cast c5ae-6015e, i got a 65 289, not a hipo, havent pulled a valvecover to check the heads but i doubt ford would have used a 65 289 block to make a 302 in 74, but i could be wrong

No, 302 blocks had longer bores. Would be a 289 unless someone has done a swap.
