So I'm in the middle of making the mounts and setting up my 7.3l in the 78 and I was curious if I can remove the factory filter assembly from my 7.3l and use inline filters like I put on my 7.3l powerstroke. Since the factory unit on the idi has a return line coming out of it, does that mean it has a regulator built in? I'm planning on switching to an electric fuel pump at some point.

The line coming off the factory fuel filter head has a regulator (ball/spring or rubber duckbill) and aids in release of air/excess pressure.

Any of you guys used a factory cummins lift pump? Seems like I could get one of those on the cheap and it would probably be pretty reliable.

Too high of fuel pressure is my guess

need a max of IIRC 10 psi post-filter

Well the cummins use an injector pump also and I think the lift pumps only push 5-8 psi

DB2 manual recommends 5 psi into the IP. Any more can affect your timing

sherwin, you are correct. the cummins pump is way too much pressure for the 7.3 IP.
IDI wants 5-6 psi, cummins needs 15. if you use the cummins pump on the ford, the
IP timing will stay too far advanced.
use one of the little jobs from the parts stores. get one rated for diesel.
