I plan on buying a tool like this to attempt my rear brake job. I have already done the worst side that was metal to metal grinding. I had hoped it was just the rivets but nope.. It was all the way thru so the drum is shot. But they are cheap to buy these days. I made a tool because nobody had one or even knew what I was talking about. But I will not try using that hand made mess on the other side of the rears. This set of shoes lasted about 8 years so I think I'm go for the rest of my natural life or close to it. Just hope to still be driving in 8 years. One never knows whats around the next bend in the road...

don't do it. the handle is nice but won't clear the hub.
this one from Matco works better. what's left of my Snap-on tool is sitting next to the new Matco tool.

What's wrong with making one like the one I made?

I made something that looked exactly like this but the handle was a little tool short. I have seen one like what you made before. I just don't recall who made it. Might check the lesile catalog.. Thanks for the heads up Calvin..

The tool in this set that is the second one from the left is all I use. We always called it a "dog-leg". The round end is to take the spring off, and the other end is to put it back on. I've been doing drum brakes for over 35 years and the tool I started out with in HS is the same one I use today. So far, it's never met a spring it could not conquer:

That second tool from the left will not remove any springs on the f350 rear shoes. Our trucks need a special tool that is required to remove the coil spring that holds the shoe to the backing plate. Its a real joke some engineer is still laughing about. We do have a pin thru the backing plate but its bent almost like a fish hook. the coil spring has to be pushed down till the ends meets up with the bent pin. Its a real joke. nothing like a bendix brake spring set up. I will add a pic of the spring later.

Step 10 is where I needed the special tool to remove that coil spring mess. As an added note. My shoe looked like the one in the pic too. Also because the lining was gone the self adjusters kept working.. Imagine that. they worked too well. I could not remove the drum nor could I reach the star wheel to back off the adjustment. so I modified my adjuster spoon.. Still can't reach the wheel. So I opened up the adjuster dust cover opening in the backing plate about 1/4 inch towards the star wheel. Then was able to back off the shoes and remove the drum easily. Never allow the rear brakes to go thru to metal or you too will be looking for the self adjuster star wheel like I was.. Its a driveway adapt and overcome what hills are in front of you additude here at my place. ICANFIXALL.......
