So my IDIT motor has been at the Machine shop for about 6 months. Now the guy has finally gotten around to putting the bottom end together after sleeving all 8 cylinders. He let me know that the new Mahle Pistons I gave him to use all have damage in the same area around the oil ring and that he broke a couple oil rings trying to install them. See pics.

He says they must have came like that from the factory, but it’s kind of a hard sell to ask for a refund on pistons I bought 4 months ago when I’m only finding out now they are damaged.

What do you guys think? Did the machine shop booger these up trying to bang them into the cylinders? I’d be really surprised if that’s the case and they managed to do it 5 times in a row.

Or have you all seen pistons come damaged from the factory like this?

My guess is that the damage is either shipping damage or that shop is staffed by a bunch of hamfisted pink hairless monkeys that have no business rebuilding motors. The fact that they broke a couple of oil rings leads me to believe the latter. I have built a whole bunch of motors and only broken the occasional compression ring, but it is damn difficult to snap an oil ring, they are more compliant for a reason. Either way, you are probably hosed and out some bucks.

I also second the shipping damage.
Typically install damage will look like this. Kind of hard to see, but the third ring popped out of the compression tool during install, and caught the deck

This is another reason I just do everything myself. Then I'm the only one I can get mad at and blame. Sorry man. I'm sure the "damage" is negligible. And my guess is that the shop really doesn't want to mess with it.

Yup lesson learned. I’m not perfect, but I’d rather myself make the mistake than someone else. It’s just cheaper that way and I learn something from it.

I should’ve just let them sleeve the block and clean everything but they offered to put the bottom end together with all new bearings for a nice price.

Looks like I will be shelling out another $500-$600 for pistons now.

I will probably start a build thread when I get the block and the heads back from the shop.

I got some parts on deck…
CDD 110 pump
R&D stage 1 turbo + 3” down pipe
R&D stage 1 injectors
R&D Fuel Return Rails
ARO Head Studs
Holley black pump
Universal Intercooler and some piping I gotta figure out
And I am looking for an exhaust upgrade

You may be able to use a OBS Powerstroke exhaust from your down pipe back. There's still several options for those trucks.
