Does anybody know what the bed payload of our trucks are? Mine weighs 7400 empty with the cap. I have had 1000+ lbs in the bed with no issues. I am planning on putting in a ton of bagged coal on a pallet so weight in the rear. Anything to be concerned about? Thanks.

1/2 ton 3/4 ton and 1 ton. If you're talking about the F250 in your sig that's a 3/4 ton so approx 3/4 ton is what it's rated for, they did make a few different GVWR by a few hundred lbs. Check the door tag and see the actual GVWR and subtract vehicle weight. 7400 empty sounds pretty heavy. My big block Supercab weighs around 6000 lbs, have not had the diesel on a scale yet but I believe an IDI weighs about 200 lbs more than an 460. So I could see maybe 6500 but much more sounds real heavy to me. IIRC my F350 IDI is 9999 GVWR, and I believe my F-250 is 8800. Only difference in GVWR is suspension on 80-97. If you're a few hundred over your truck isn't likely to snap in half.

1996 F250 ext. cab : I had 1.3 tonnes cement in the bed last summer - no problems. I think if its under 1.5-1.8 tonnes there should be no problems.

I've had 1800lbs I. The bed of a 94 ranger. Your truck will be fine. I've seen my dad haul 2 tons of scrap in his bed. But he had air bags. 94 f250 hardly even squatted

My door sticker is indeed 8800. My weight comes from a dump scale that could well be off (they only care about differences). My cap is heavy for sure. I think I am fine for hauling a ton short distance (30 miles). Thanks for all the replies.

As long as your rear shackles aren't rotted I think you'll be fine. Before I knew any better or cared I've had these 80-97 trucks bottomed out many times. Check your shackles though, a friend's snapped when he was loaded but they were rotted from salt. Shackles are the weak point.

I don't believe that is true. I don't know why they use those designations, but the payload capacites are far greater than 1000, 1500, and 2000. Here's one example.

I would have to agree... Ford has overbuilt the trucks, half, 3/4 and 1 ton trucks for the past few decades. Not sure one the newest ones, but on the 70's - 97 and I figure the newer SuperDuty trucks are probably this way also. Ford has always seemed to realize that people are going to use their truck, as a truck, and have underrated them for safety reasons. I've not loaded up a newer truck, other than an 92 Ranger, and had it pretty heavy, but we had a 73 F-250 Regular Cab 2wd, 390, C-6) that I know for a fact we had 475 gallons of water in one of the green pickup water tanks. Mom and Dad live in the country and have a shallow well, and for several summers during a slight drought, the well would go dry, and we had to haul water. We filled that tank completely one day, not to the 450 "full" mark, but to the lid. So 475 x 8 lbs per Gallon = 3800 gallons of water, plus the tank and a platform we built to angle the tank to help empty it, so at least 4000lbs in the bed. Truck would go fine, stopping was more of the issue, it stopped, but just not quickly, just like pulling a heavy trailer. We have also had cut firewood, stacked in the bed, high as the cab, front to back of the 8 foot bed. That was a heavy load also, no idea how heavy, just hauled it home. A regular load in the truck was out IH Cub Cadet 149 with a tiller or a mower, most every weekend, all spring and summer. Hardly knew that 1200lbs was back there......

I would think 2000lbs in the bed, properly secured, should be ok. Your truck, so your decision.......

As has been stated, you'll be fine. I've hauled 3000 lbs. of firewood and almost 4000 lbs. of gravel in my F250 (which has the same GVWR rating as your truck) with no problems.
My truck also has a 2" body lift.

I have carried green logs piled up high and never had concerns with it. My primary consideration was stopping and following distances.

Yeah, I should be good to go. I remember the previous owner gave me a picture loaded with hardwood-- that was a good load. I am curious about the reading I got at the local dump as it seems high, although stuff adds up. I am going to measure it again at one of those Cat scales next time I pass by one.

Ive had 2.78 tons in my truck and the helpers weren't bottomed out but that was also all back road driving but it never had a problem hauling it, actually the lady running the scale was impressed that it wasn't even squatting bad with the load.
