Hey guys, I have been a long time member of FTE but im coming to you guys for some advice on my 1993 Ford F-250.

A few days ago i noticed that my clutch pedal is almost fully released before the clutch engages. So ive come to the conclusion that its time for a new clutch. I havnt decided if im going to try and do it myself or if im going to pay somebody to do it. But i also havnt decided if im going to put a new DMF in or convert over to a SMF. Whats the difference between a DMF and a SMF? Whats the advantage of converting to a SMF? From talking to a few guys over at FTE it seems like theres a good chance there will be some very very loud gear rattle at idle with a SMF.

I have already talked to 2 shops around here. They both install Luk clutches and they both recommended going with a SMF and upgrading to a 12" setup.

Im just here to get some advice from you guys. Thanks

an smf is a flywheel that is one single piece a dmf is a two piece flywheel it has two surfaces and springs to absorb some shock from the engine

I just converted to an smf and here it what i have noticed with the smf advantages/disadvantages

advantages of smf
cheaper
normally doesn't go out just has to be resurfaced

disadvantages
gear rattle(mel says to overfill the tranny-refer to tech articles for how much)
truck shakes a little

the truck shakes from the "lug" that is in these engines, the same reason that you leave your belts just a little looser on these trucks

Check the tech articles for the dmf to smf conversion post

no actually i ordered the clutch from the local napa auto parts the crazy thing is that i put in a new clutch pp and tob and had the flywheel checked out by a local "trans specialist" and he said that the dmf was still good. When i ordered the clutch i made sure that it had the springs in the center cause i planned on swapping to an smf i can get you the part number and brand tommorrow. then not 5,000 miles later dmf is complete trash. just went and bout a smf and installed
