Why are thermostats being listed as upper and lower? Fordparts has them listed as upper and lower, same part #, so does rockauto.

Its probably upper and lower water necks. The upper one has the thermostat in it. The upper one has the odd shaped gasket and the lower one is just a round one with 2 holes in it. I bought a motorcraft thermostat from rockauto and it came with the gasket. The one I put on from Oreillys this summer had already fallen apart by the time I took it out. It was almost 20.00 also.
