they say 1250 max but most guys run to 1600. the cummins can take much more heat than any other motor. i've been told that 1600 and under was safe for quite a bit of time. the guys that tractor pull on the weekends can see 1800 a lot of times during pulls and they break trans not engines...

of course according to this article the 6.2l max is 1100 and i pushed mine to 1400 bunches of times! LOL LOL

Just remember a lot of pullers run water injection. I'd say 600 is a good average for a flat run at moderate speed. Those Cummins can take the heat because of all the air that is getting shoved in. The more air you can stuff in (intercooled of course) the quenching effect is quite significant.

I usually start to let out around 1250, but the highest mine will make is 1300 on a really hot day, with a heavy load.

However, I have a buddy who used to drive a 96' 6.9 truck, no turbo, pump cranked, and he would run 1400 all the time..

Interestingly enough, the same guy has a 85' ranger, with the factory 4cyl turbo diesel. his grandpa bought it new, and pulled heavy with it since new. Once my buddy got it, he put a set of gauges in it. On a 270 mile trip pulling a loaded 6x12 tandem axle uhaul trailer, pulling hills, the pyro would hit 1400 degree POST TURBO.... and thats 100% bone stock..

So I figure if that little motor can take 1400 post turbo for 24 years, and still run strong... then my 7.3 can take 1300 pre trubo all day long..
