So I know this has probably been covered before but, my king pins have about had it. I've been nursing them along for a few years but I've decided now is the time to fix this right. What all has to come out to get the out? This is in an 86 with a twin I beam front if that matters. My idea was to take the I-beams out and have the old bushings pressed out and new ones pressed in and dressed. Is this the right approach? Trying to do this right but also not incur a huge bill, so any and all advice is appreciated.

Your '86 twin I beam should have ball joints. Buy a ball joint removal tool or rent one from the supply store you use. Put the adjustable bushings on the upper ball joints and get it aligned when done. This is really a good time to do the inner pivot bushings also, just food for thought. Good luck.;Sweet

You will need new inner hub seals and don't rule out new axle u-joints either. The locking hubs will come out with an allen wrench and some dental pick tools for the retainers laying within. A D44 or D50 bearing nut tool will be necessary to remove the hub/rotor assembly. The spindles are usually a royal PITA to remove. Wooden blocks and a BFH usually do the trick. I do believe you can rent a puller specific to the spindles also. After this the axles will pull out and give you the room needed to service the ball joints.

You could remove the whole assembly, do the pivot bearings and replace the ball joints on a bench but this may just be unnecessary work.

Did any of the suspensions/ axles that Ford used in the 80's have actual king pins? I thought that they all used ball joints by the 80's.

The 4x4 king pin 60 fronts are rare to the 86 or 87 to 91, but there are king pin 2wds that just don't happen to get talked about. I'm not sure exactly what years.

This is an F250, and it most assuredly has king pins. It is not 4wd. I'm not even sure what axle it has, but I know it is a twin I beam with king pins and coil springs. Hubs are retained only by a crown nut and a cotter pin. Seems like the newer trucks all had ball joints whether they were solid fronts or twin I beam or TTB.

1986 f350 2wd single or dualie most definitely was the last year for kingpins. 1987 was the first year for balljoints across the board f250 and f350
f450's no matter what year until 1999 was kingpins.

king pin replacement -remove

usualy done with axle or i-beams on truck ..there is a nut&bolt located next to the king pin that holds it in place remove the bolt .spray penetrating oil in .you should be able to drive the pin down with a hammer or air hammer depending on the rust .remove spindle.the bushings can easily be removed .drive a point in between the edge of the bushing and it will fall out .simply drive the new bushings in with a fitted dowel tool ,reinstall spindle with proper shims install the new king-pin in the axle line up the notch on the kingpin with the bolt

I pulled my axles with radius arms attached and took them to a truck machine shop where they pressed the old out, and installed the new bushings and pins. I could not pound out one of the pins with a small sledge... They charged around $200-250 IIRC (plus parts) per axle, but thats been a few years.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe Ford kepted King Pins under F350's untill 1991 on both 4x4's and 2wd's.

Last year for King Pin F250's was 1986.

I know for a fact Econoline vans (1 tons E350's) had King Pins up till 1991. And my 87 E350 motorhome has King Pins as well.
