I have read alot about GV overdrives, and perused their website, but I am wondering how the overdrive works with my automatic. Will it automatically engage "between" each gear making my 4spd into an 8 spd? if so, does it respond to speed or load or what? Basically I am wondering if it will operate kind of transparently once installed, or will it be something I have to manually operate? Or somewhere in between?

No, the GV has a pump in it that needs the truck moving so it can create pressure to work. The U.S. Gear od is all gears and it works on all the gears. It has no pumps. Some like it better than the GV and its not as costly too.

Darrin Tosh can probably give you an idea of how they work behind an automatic. No doubt he will post. I only have them behind manuals, so I'm unsure of how it behaves. The big advantage of the GV is it can shift under load. I'm not sure how the US Gear works behind an automatic, as I always thought it needed a clutch.

Can't tell you how they work with an E4OD, but I had one behind a C6 for a while. If the GV was 'on', it would kick into OD automatically at 45 mph. It does not shift between gears, you have to do that with a combination of the column shifter and the foot switch for the GV, which gets rather cumbersome. Splitting gears with a GV is much easier with my 5 speed with the GV switch on the shifter.
IIRC the Gear Vendors manual makes no note of the unit behind an overdrive automatic vs a direct drive automatic, so operation should be the same except you have the additional control over the overdrive on the E4OD.

I have never used the GV as a gear splitter with my C6, like Shane said it can be cumbersom. I usually keep on automatic, and it kicks in at 45 MPH on normal acceleration and works great. When I am getting into the throttle I manually shut it off so it won't kick in untill I want it to.

Eventually I will be installing a B&M Type floor shifter with an Eaton switch on the shifter. Then I may use it more for a spliter.

As for the E4od, you basically will have a choice of overdrive when towing, or double overdrive when not towing. The GV will drop your rpm's by 500, and the E4od drops it around 700 RPM's

I think it would be an ideal setup!;Sweet
