so i have confirmed that my idi is pulling air in through the water bleed off screw at the bottom of the seperator and causing my engine to loose its prime overnight making it a hog to start in the morning. My questions is

what is the fuel filter that fits the 7.3 idi that just eliminates the bottom opening so its a regular filter like the 6.9 or a regular oil filter if that gives you all a visual.

The auto parts store didnt know what i was talking about, so i compared the 87 6.9 filter and 1993 7.3 and besides the obvious water seperator portion on the bottom the threads that the filter screws onto the housing is way bigger on the 7.3 i used autozone part number ff815-6.9 and autozone ff816-7.3 for comparison.

i cant find the info anywhere searching the forum either.

if you need the sensor port you can use the wix #33617 or if you dont need it use wix #33417

I am running a baldwin filter right now but plan on switching over to the wix next filter change because the baldwin filters are a pain to get I have to drive all the wasy across town to a freightliner dealer.

hope this helps

No, because the fuel filter/water sep is integral in the 7.3 IDI. Just upgrade to the Napa/Wix style, I'm pretty sure you won't have that problem you're having with the stocker. he stock filter has all kinds of little parts that can leak, origns etc. The wix has none of this. They are pricey though. Type in those #s he gave you on www.fleetfilter.com I must give my disclaimer, I have no financial interest in that site...I have bought much of my NAPA stuff there, and its often much cheaper than at the store...just buy a few filters at a time and you'll get a good enough deal. I use a similar style fuel filter h2o sep. on my biodiesel pump. No leaks ever as long as you get the h2o drain plug tight. No seals or orings to leak and when you get to the change interval you toss it.

That fleetfilter price is about $17 cheaper than what Napa charges here. How bad do they hit you on shipping?

If I understood Ramon's post, the WIX #33417 is a fit that does not have the open bottom.

Find out the thread-size of the center-hole and the O.D. of the top O-ring, then look for a solid-bottom fuel-filter that has the same threads and is close in O.D.

I had the same issues with the seperate water-drain water-in-fuel sensor mess in my filters for the Cummins.

I was able to find a filter that was twice as long and solid-bottom that has a threaded drain-valve made on the filter itself; the valve is permanently fixed to the filter, so a new filter has a new valve; even though they are twice the length, they cost less than the original style.

Another option is to go shopping at a big truck grave-yard and get a remote-mount dual-filter head that has a primary(medium fine) and secondary(ultra-fine) filter; you can mount these units in a less-intrusive position than the stock filter and, being common as flies, the filters will be much less expensive.;Sweet

Sorry it took so long for me to get back too many irons in the fire right now. what i was saying is that the sensor port is where the water in fuel light plug goes you take the sensor out of the bottom piece on the OEM setup and screw it into the bottom so the dummy light still works. Both of the filters have the H2O drain but one doesnt have the spot for the dummy light.

hope that was clear as mud hahaha.

Hi in the Cascades, Nearly- Redmond,Oregon
JD Diesel, thanks for that site, interesting. www.fleetfilter.com
LA350, how you find the PDF Price List on specials from the http://www.midwestwheel.com/
Home page? I poked round & couldn't find it....be good for future ref.
I could pull it up when I clicked that other link.

There's several sites out on Web with info, but I like WIX Site for cross ref all kind of filters....gives dimensions & specs & lots of other #'s that will interchange.
The Factory 6.9 is 7/8"x14 with gasket OD 2.834" x ID 2.462"
7.3 is 1"x14 & gasket is OD 3.353" xID 3.160"

I chunked the 7.3 factory filter for several reasons. Price, availability, & other filter/s uses I use on several other things also....B/hoe, Cat Dozer, Excavator Dieutz engine, etc, etc Just buy by case. They're also primarily the older style Cummins filter, & usually can be found anywhere nationwide.

I bought the Fleetguard filter head #393061800-S 1"x 14 thread, Gasket mount surface OD 2.96"x ID 2.16"($22.00+)& been using closed bottom & 10Micron shorter Fleetgard# FF105 about $5.00+(Wix#33109)
& F/G# FS1000 (tall filter) about $12.00+ (Wix# 33406)...this one has water seperator/drain & is 5 Micron. Several other filters fit this same head.

I snagged case of F/Guard #FS1214 on Ebay on the cheap while back that is same thread & gasket dimensions & nearly as tall as the FS1000, also has bottom water drain.

Like MIDNIGHT RIDER said...."get a remote-mount dual-filter head that has a primary(medium fine) and secondary(ultra-fine) filter; you can mount these units in a less-intrusive position than the stock filter and, being common as flies, the filters will be much less expensive."
I got filters stuck everywhere on my rig.....

Just my 2cents

:dunno when I had my leaky o-ring incident, I picked up the 3417 (non screw bottom) from napa, like $30 and he gave me full refund on my 3217 screw bottom filter of $9 back to me.

thanks to above people for insight on online filter suppliers, only if some were closer to save a few $$$ on shipping... still half price on filters can spare some dollars on shipping I guess.
