Called a Trans specialist in Schaumburg IL. Sales manager said that E4OD transplants are common in larger vehicle, the E4OD Heavy Duty trans, which is 1400 bucks, 400 bucks more than the standard E4OD, has a RV Torque converter that allows for better mileage, power transfer for towing and array of upgrades.

I am going to price compare other options but this seems like a good start to hook up to my 7.3L idi.

Billy, have you considered a Gearvender or a US gear unit for overdrive? This link has some good details about them

Billy,

Looks like you are on the right path, something that struck me last night while thinking about this is that there are two different E4OD's but it appears that you are on the right track. If you do locate one, just make sure it will fit the 7.3L, the one they stuck behind the gassers had a different bellhousing pattern. Whitmore brings up a good point with the Gearvendor add on. It might be worthwhile to search that option out too.

I guess the thing that would be cool about the Gearvender unit is that some day when you sell the rig you could remove the Gearvender and use it on other units..................just something to think about.

Heavy Duty AOD Tranny

Another option I found for a better price is a Heavy Duty AOD rebuild.

These trannies do not require all the electronics, (and the things that go wrong with them).

As like the simplicity of the 7.3L idi for that reason. Me GMC 6.5 si controlled by electronics and all the gremlins that live in there.

An AOD Heavy duty is 800 bucks! Half the price.

Any direction? comments? would be appreciated. This choice is critical.'

Thanks:thanks:

Gearvendor

The gear vendor add is is nice, but spendy. over 2000 grand doe my application and that doesn't include customizing the shaft to fit and installation.

IIRC the AOD is for a small block gasser (302 cu in engines), while it is a manually controlled (not electronic) 4 spd OD tranny I dont think the bell housing will match up, and if it did I really doubt it could withstand the torque of the 7.3L. The AOD later in life became the 4R70W and it is in use behind the 5.4L in the F150 and Expedition. Iff'n yer looking to go OD the best option is the E4OD. Its a fairly common unit behind the IDI's, just need to figger out what you need to control it with.

Thanks again.

Shoot, I knew it was to good to be true. Trying to keep the cost down but I don't want "no stinkin gassers".

I can get a regular E4OD for under one thousand. But I can't touch an E4OD new or rebuilt for under 1400. I think I need the extra beef for this rig if I were to do it.

Thanks again.:thanks:

I had my E4OD rebuilt a year and a half ago and my stock TC was toasted too. When given the option of getting another stock TC or upgrading to a heavy duty TC, I opted for the HD TC for an additional charge of $525. Seventy thousand miles later...no problems. In hind sight it was worth the extra bucks. BTW, I have a '97 F-350 PSD.

I dont think the bell housing of the "regular duty E4OD" will mate up to the block of a 7.3, thats the one that was mated to the gassers, you'll need the Heavy duty E4OD to mate to the 7.3

Richard is right too, po' boying it will cost you more in the long run. Now if you want a serious tranny, get the Monster Box components or visit Brian over at BTS.

Go to Suncaost! Thier are some guys around here running them in their PSD's and they are plain out bad units. They can handle whatever you throw at them! Swamps diesel has a place that builds transmissions to handle thier large injectors that are suppose to be great. THey list all the upgrades on their site and they are 3500 including the convertor!

The Truth.

Sometimes a guy needs to be reminded of that. I am like everybody else....trying to live life on a budget. But an extra 500 bucks now to get the heavy duty tranny will make the difference in the long run. And and extra 500 bucks is not going to make a difference 6 months from now.

In the end I'll have a tight rig.

Im going through the same thing right now . 7.3L 1988 c-6 tranny . I need a rebuild , and want a OD transmission . c-6 runs me around 3000rpm at 65mph .

I do to much highway travel for these rpm.....and it sucks alot more fuel .

Every option seems to have its down side though . GV units are way to expensive....and i havent had much luck finding a used GV to fit a c-6 tranny .

And converting to a E4OD involves find one and then figuring out the computer issue....im sure when you buy a rebuild they dont supply it . So much money just for an OD .

O well , let us know what u decide .
