My first post. I currently have a 00 F250 xlt crew cab 4x4 auto 4100 transmission with a Powerstroke diesel with a superchip's 80 hp chip and 4 inch turbo back exhause installed.

I am looking at an 04 2500 LT crew cab 4x4 auto allison. I have never owned a chevy diesel so I have a few questions.

1. Power difference (with a tuner and exhaust)

2. Realistic fuel mileage, I currently get 12mpg as a daily driver in my ford.

3. DIY friendly?

Any information advise, would be appreciated.

Power will be far greater with the duramax. The allison tranny is way better then the old 4R100. Fuel milage should be upper teens, though your truck should be able to do that as well. And it will be a little less DIY friendly, but that is my own opinion based on absolutly nothing except looking under the hood of both styled trucks LOL

i have dealt with a lot of fords being a ford tech for 3.5 years

and i just bought a duramax, so i should be able to help you, take into consideration i didnt buy the duramax because i dont love the fords, i bought it because i wanted something different, ive been around the fords and the dodges for a long time and wanted a change, that being said...

the stock duramax should run with or beat your ford in its current setup

fuel milage should be better high pressure fuel injection systems usually oust anything high pressure oil systems can come up with, there is just more control in the burn, witch in turn increases effeciency witch in turn gains power and MPG

DIY friendly is hard to say, im baised because i have messed with the fords for a number of years, with the 7.3 in your SD it should be comparable to working on a LB7 duramax, but you should specifically mention what kind of do it yourself you are going to get into.

DIY friendly is all about knowledge and how much you want to learn. There is a learning curve to every new truck or car, how far do you want to take it. I find puterized vehicles more user friendly because they often tell you where they hurt.

Once you peel back the layer of wiring and cool looking:rolleyes: plastic covers on these new engines it's easy to work on them. Putting the wiring back on is simple, almost every plug is different and the harnesses are usually made in a way that once you lay it back across the engine just start on one end and keep plugging stuff in until you find the other end, that way you don't miss anything.

A harness? What's that? The thingy that holds
all fives wires required to make mine go vroom. :)

jeffnzoya. You'll be happy with an '04 D/max.
Dad's got an '05 and has had no real complaints.

Now that you're past the learning curve you need to get a common rail that only needs 3 wires hooked up to go vroom.LOL

BTW... Dad's '05 is a sharp looking truck and I'm not a GM fan.;Sweet

And I get to drive it one day next week.
The engine lights on and he'd like to get it looked at.
So I told him I'd bring it in to work and check it for him.
The last time I had it, it took me 1 1/2 hours to go to
the parts store and back. Took quite the long
detour. :D It's a very nice driving truck. ;Sweet

Last time you prolly drove it for 10 minutes and spent the next hour and 20 minutes cleaning the chunks of rubber off the rear quarters.
