I have a NAPA “long” starter in my 92. Been in there several months and working well. It been “leaned on” many times due to glow plug and air issues.

This one:

I know this is an IDI starter and this is the PSD section.... but the same people make both.......

I ran into a web site that recommended you put a separate ground (Neg) wire from one of the the starter mounting bolt to the engine (battery Neg wire) bolt, use a Star washer on both ends. That is due to the poor grounding effect, the current has to travel thru all the bolt connections.
Current travels from Negative to Positive.
Voltage travels from Positive to Negative.
Star washer should be an external Star.

If you have a Automatic, it was found there was arching even on the TC.

That makes sense.
I would think of it like welding. You don't want the ground/work lead traveling through a bearing.
Somewhat like the ole "lightning struck my vehicle and seized a wheel bearing."

not to mention that it has to transfer through aluminum to cast to even start grounding (on SD's anyway), and with any oil leak in the valley,..... yeaaaaa.
