disabling gp controller

what's the best way to disable the gpc in my '85 6.9 IDI? Pull the purple wire off the relay? need to do some cranking & may need to give it a quick shot of ether after cleaning out my gas tank.

The Purple wire only goes to the WTS lite, the safetest way is to disconnect the battery wires on the relay, two yellow wires.
