Dip Stick Tube Leak

I have a small leak on my 97 powerstroke where the dip stick tube assembly goes into the pan. Was leaking bad until I tightened the nut. I've heard the horror stories about the bottom half of the assembly falling into the pan. Question is what is the procedure to keep the lower half from getting away when you replace the o-ring.

Thanks much. I was going make a rod to go into the flange but hadn't thought about the brush. Gonna try it out this week..
