These type of swaps are commonplace, there are a good number of 5.9CTD powered ramchargers out there. That said, the dodge bodies are something aweful as in how they're actually constructed and hold up and the frames leave much to be desired.
You will have a difficult time if you just have a gas dodge and buy just a cummins engine/tranny to swap in. There are many more CTD specific parts that buying the whole truck for is a wise choice.
