can a busted steering pump put load on engine?

my PS pump is shot my steering wont come when he truck is started for about 2 minute and it also makes chirping/clicking noises and whines when you turn the wheel.

I'll note the chirping/clicking clacking noise goes away if the truck is run for like 20 minutes

I'm guessing the noise is maybe busted vanes inside the pump or something? could this cause the pulley to put a load on the engine because the engines trying to spin the busted ps pump
