Eh... I did that before. Put the front and rear main seals in backwards in a "temporary" motor that I'm sure needs a rebuild - it had a really bad knock as well.
After losing two quarts of oil in 50 miles, I just added lucas to replace the oil. Ended up adding a full gallon, then added oil and some lucas as it leaked out.
It got me 1,000 miles round trip, and kept running for the next 4 months until I replaced it with my rebuilt original motor.
I forget what I needed to take off that motor, but I'll say this: Everything in it was well covered in a film of sticky oil.
(Note: it's still sitting in the barn, waiting for me to get around to rebuilding it)
