drilling in cast is easy, its actually a nice material to machine from. mine i drilled a pilot hole then up to 7/16 and tapped it 1/4 npt for my thermocouple. took about 15 mins in the truck, drilled it right down from the top. either way you should be good. 4 " away is short and no messing up the manifolds.

I drilled and tapped mine with 1 bit from the top I just sit on the engine and drill. I didn't use any cutting oil I dont think you need it for cast parts. It took about 10 min to drill, tap and route wires and install gauge. Oh another thing DONT CUT THE WIRES TO THE THERMOCOUPLE. just roll up the extra and stuff it under the dash somewhere.

Generally speaking, I find that if you put your pyro in the passenger side up pipe, right by the flange, you will use the appropriate amount of wire if you mount the gauge in an A pillar pod.
