Im not sure what's wrong with this thing. We cleaned the cables, then a couple days later the batteries decided they no longer wanted to start the truck so we put a new set of batteries in it and I noticed it was boiling acid out of the caps. I checked the charging system and it checks ok at 14.5 volts. What gives? Why would batteries boil at an okay charging voltage?

When my meter checks okay and things are not okay, then it is time to get a second meter's opinion.

Providing all connections are correct, the only thing that boils the acid is over-charging, so I suspect the regulator is haywire.

Try a different meter and various RPMs and see what the readings are.

Other than that, it don't make sense to me.:dunno

You have an overcharging issue. The regulater is not shuting down when the batteries are fully charged. If its an extenal voltage regulater type then change it.

does not need to be that high all the time UNLESS you have a really good reason for it. like emergency responder vehicles. boiling the batteries is a fact of life then. they also get replaced yearly as a result.

Disconnect the batteries and let them sit overnight. Then measure voltage for each one. If one of the batteries has a bad cell, the regulator will dump huge amounts of current into the system trying to get the voltage high enough. It's one of the reasons some people insist on an ammeter in addition to a voltage regulator to keep tabs on their system. Good luck!
