My Suburban is an '89, but the head gasket went bad in the original engine and the guy I bought it from had replaced it with the one from an '83 Blazer. Is one any better than the other or are they about the same?

firstly-
welcome to our quiet little corner on the web:thumbsup:
As far as better or worse, the differences don't make a noticable better or worse comparison. '83 blocks supposedly were a little thicker in the webbing and the nickel alloy content was higher. It added up to slightly better rebuildablity but that's about it. The heads are different, they are unique in the manner they have machined rockers with metal tensioner springs versus the stamped steel rockers and the plastic button retainers.
outside of that, I can't tell you if those features will add more HP but I really doubt it.
