This being my first diesel pick up. I want put a new temp gauge but I dont know where to plug it in on the block. I'd like to keep the stock gauge working.
Any ideas?
Also what is the temp suppose to be on one of these without a load?

There is a pipe plug in the rear of the head on drivers side, that's as good place as any for the gauge. If it's a square head plug, use the proper size square driver, don't use a 12 point socket, it'll round it off, might be a hex plug, use the proper size hex wrench, a Chinese hex wrench will twist, plug comes out hard.

Also what is the temp suppose to be on one of these without a load?

Temp runs around 180*F with the 195*F t'stat. With a 203*F t'stat around 195* to 200*. Use only a Motorcraft t'stat if ever changed. The clutch fan will kick in at ~240*F.

What Bill said. Here it is, use an 8-point 9/16" socket:

Some people OCD that there might be 1/1000th of a degree of temperature loss using this port. There isn't, but if it concerns you then just move the overtemp light from the front of the the head to the rear and plug your temp gauge into that port.

By the way Bill, that's one creepy avatar you have there!
