    Fuel economy mods

FYI for those of you keeping count ALL engine oil filtration systems are bypass type, the simple reasoning being (yes, in this case, some automotive engineers can reason) dirty oil is better than no oil at all. So, there is a filtration system out there that filters down to something like 5...

    Negative Battery Cable Size

You may try a battery shop that can make cables for you. I'd go with 2/0 copper cables. Remember whatever is coming from the pos. side has to get back to the batt. through the ground cables. Be sure that each terminal is sealed with the glue-seal heatshrink tubing. It will cost more, but the...

    need some info brothers

I see some of you are running WMO. What gives? I'd thought of it, since it's petroleum, but doesn't it plug up the filter rather quickly? And, what's the average ratio of WMO to diesel? I have about 15 gals. floating around that hadn't gotten to the auto parts store for recycling. If I can run...

'84 IDI for sale in WA

The weld inspector at the shop i work at is selling his 2wd 1984 IDI. I told him I'd post it here to see if anyone is interested, then pass his name along to whoever is and they and he can talk directly. I know he's had a bunch of work done to it and it runs superbly. If anyone is interested...

    Oil Breakdown?

The lift pump is new about 5,000 miles ago, not to say that it hasn't developed a diaphragm leak. However, the fuel system has unknown mileage and with ULSD here in WA state, I have a feeling that my seals are getting chewed up, as can happen to these aged fuel systems without updated seals. I'm...

    Oil Breakdown?

Well, I did get my oil change on Sat. and found just a tad of "extra" oil, like maybe 3 qts. So, I believe I have a shaft seal from my IP leaking fuel into the crankcase, which is causing a dilution of the solution, and thus low oil pressure and all of the problems I've been having.

    Oil Breakdown?

I forgot to mention that the problem starts and leaves gradually, and that the oil pressure seems to get lower as the engine/oil warms up.

    Oil Breakdown?

I run Shell Rotella T 20W-50. How long is a good question. my spedo doesn,t work (worn out drive gear on t-case output). I'm doing a much needed oil change today, so I'll let you know how it works out. BTW, the oil level was fine, and the knocking was coming from the lower center of the firewall...

    Oil Breakdown?

I'm having an interesting problem. The only thing I can think of it being is oil breakdown. Anyway, I first had it happen the other day as I was driving on a 60 mph road with some rolling hills. I had been driving for 15 min or so, the engine was up to temp, and when i hit a hill, it started...

    Weird Starting?

I had a similar problem with my 6.9. I found out it was air in my fuel system due to a plugged fuel pickup in my front tank. You might try cranking the engine with the key off by jumping the starter relay on the pass. side fender, while holding the bleeder valve open on the fuel filter head. If...

    !!fan clutch eliminator!!

Let us not forget that fan clutches do actually serve a purpose. They allow the fan to work in conjunction with the thermostat to regulate the engine temp. under varying loads. The clutch is there to disengage the fan when it is not needed, thereby saving fuel. Using a solid mount fan won't...

More advice 4" exhaust or current 3"

exhaust conundrums Well, that 2.5" theory may work for a gasser, since some back pressure actually helps in the cylinder scavenging effect, but for the diesels, the more flow from the exhaust, the better. Remember, there is no restriction from a throttle plate in the intake side of things which...

    Build-Up

head studs on a 6.9 I see talk of head studs in a 6.9. Does this allow higher boost pressures than the 10 psi max recommended for these engines? And especially if you toss an intercooler into the equation, you have the potential to build some serious boost!! Rich

Cleaning out the IDI Monster Garage!

Hey slide, converting from R12 to 134A is easy!! It will take a bit of elbow grease and a trip to a certified a/c guy, but no "conversion" parts. Procedure: Replace all o-rings @ the hose connections in the system, replace the receiver/dryer, take rig to shop for a/c system flush (to remove any...

    WTB 4R100 or E4OD 4x4 Diesel Tranny

I think a long tailshaft is from a 2WD. I think I may be able to swap in a short shaft, but i'll need to check on it. Is it a 4R100 or an E4OD?

    WTB 4R100 or E4OD 4x4 Diesel Tranny

I'm doing a swap in my wife's Excursion from a V10 to a Cummins N14...Just kidding!! I'll be putting in the 5.9 L Cummins and the conversion kit doesn't have an adapter for the gas 4R100 available, only for the diesel 4R100. So, I'm looking for the diesel version of the tranny I already have. I...

    IDI stuff and a 99.5-00 7.3

I'm currently looking for a 4R100 4x4 diesel tranny for a conversion I'm doing on my wife's Excursion. Was that truck was an auto tranny and is it available? Oh yeah, where might you be located? Rich

6.9 sitting for months w/ valve cover open- 5.5 gallons of water in crankcase-hmm...

Well, looks like Mel informed you on the four bolts that hold the converter to the flex plate. Haynes says to keep the converter in the tranny any way possible (my words) because lining up the tangs on the converter with the hydraulic oil pump in the tranny (the one you can't see, it's all done...

    Turboing a 6.9L

Back when I talked to the IH dealership guy, I asked him if a turbo from a 7.3 powerstroke would work on my 6.9. He insisted that it was designed specifically for an electronically controlled engine. As I am not familiar with the powerstrokes, I'm not certain that the turbo is not also...

    Speedo & Cruise problems

well, i screwed with my speedo gear again the other day and now i noticed that it reads half speed (going 30, reads 15) but without the former jumpy needle. I'm stumped!! Rich

Being a diesel mechanic, I would tell you as a professional to yank it out and rebuild. However, what do you have to lose if you try IDIeiselman's suggestion? If it needs to be rebuilt anyway, anything that would get cleaned out, bored, turned, or otherwise looked at, will when the rebuild is...

    Speedo & Cruise problems

I had the cable out before i figured out it was the driven gear, and it seemed to be lubed lightly to me, with no frays whatsoever. I did not lube either of the cables (the one from the speed sensor and the one to it) since they seemed to be ok in that dept. I have chucked the end of the driven...

    Speedo & Cruise problems

I'm starting a new thread 'cause I have a different set of Q's. My speedo reads erratically, for one. I replaced the driven gear at the end of the cable going in to the T-case, but I'm still having problems. i removed the cable from the t-case and felt the drive gear on the output shaft and it...

    Turboing a 6.9L

Interesting comment about the inspector's truck. The only reason I question the comment about the timing is because he has ALL his work, even down to oil changes, done by a very reputable diesel and performance shop here in town. On top of that, he had his injection system replaced (pump and...

    Borg Warner T-? 4 Speed Q

I can't say that I recommend them so much as to say that they are at least as good as petrolium-based oils. If you go with synthetics use a reputable brand, because they are just that...reputable, and for a reason. However, bear in mind that synthetics can cost double or triple what...
