A good friend of mine has about 12 old MB's like that. All run on vegi oil. He rarely has any trouble with them. They seem to be more dependable than a new MB.

They are super simple and reliable. The 240 D is built like a tractor and has seen taxi duty all over the world.
Mine is red.

I knew nothing about them also. Bought one from Eric (member) down in SC. Had Apex Trans (old member) haul it from Monroe, NC to Maryland for me. Put two tires, carrier bearing and something else into it to pass PA inspection. Pressure washed all of the carpets (mold) and ran it for about 18 months ~ 30K. Most of the vacuum lines did not work - trunk release, windows, defroster, sun roof etc. Sold it to a guy in NY for what I paid. Not counting taxes, registration, insurance and fuel the car cost me about $300 (inspection, transport) for 30k.

After the nuclear holocaust, there'll be two things left in this world...cockroaches and Mercedes diesels ;Sweet

The 1985 and older cast-iron M-B diesels are loud and underpowered, but they're about the most reliable engines you'll ever see. If the rest of the car has been kept up (front suspension problems can get expensive if neglected), I strongly contend that the W123 is one of the best cars out there.

And they're better than the underpowered Volvo diesels from the same era. It's a shame the ad didn't show interior pictures. If everything works you won't lose that much money on it and it will be a cheap get around vehicle.

They last forever because they make about as much power as a lawn mower LOL

My wife's parents have a W115 era 300D. Slow, smokey, vacuum lines rotted out, but it will get mid 20's. I would like to find an older mercedes wagon and swap an OM606 in it with a 5 speed. You can make those have some power.

I've had several W123 4cyl and 5 cyl diesels. amazing cars, built like a truck! parts are actually cheap because of so many aftermarket suppliers, even aftermarket parts made in Germany! they are much better with a manual trans but not many made it to North America. my 85 300D with a turbo could pull a steady 45mpg with a weak 4spd auto and weighed in near 4000lbs.

damn good reason they are STILL in taxi use all over the world!

BrianX128, et. al.,

The sole problem with a MB 240D is that I can outrun one. = S-L-O-W, SLOW doesn't adequately describe the "lack of performance", though there is no such thing as wearing out a 240D.

Do yourself a favor & buy a rust-FREE one-owner, southern-owned/driven, 300D, 300CD or a 300DT with about 150,000 miles or less & it will likely outlast YOU.
(The 1985 model is the best one, imo. = I've owned over 2 dozen since 1976.)

The BEST place to find a GREAT "forever" 300D is at a local estate sale.
(Pay a local/well-known Mercedes mechanic to do a pre-purchase inspection = 100.00 cash is about right for the PPI.)

Second best is www.ebay.com provided that it comes with at least a 90 day warranty.

just my opinion, satx
