So, I'm wrenching on a 1993 F-250 4x4 with auto lockers, trying to replace ball joints. So I'm gotten all of the clips and lock rings out here , and after doing some research I've found I needed a specific socket for this. However i fail to see how this socket removes what I need, but maybe I'm wrong. The more I research the more confused I get so I'm hoping to get a more specific response. Napa has the tool I allegedly need, but it's $50 and no returns so once I'm positive on what I need i will shop around for a cheaper one. Anyways, here is a picture of where I'm at and thank you in advance for the help!

You have the nut and the bearings removed. That is all that holds the spindle on there. The socket is to remove the nut that holds the bearings on. It should have 4 protrusions that engage the nut.

Much appreciated! Am I to the point where I need the part nthough? I don't see how the socket fits in there though to do anything.

Isn't that the little retaining washer with the holes in it hiding back in there? You should have 2 spanner nuts with the notches in them.

This picture shows the outer retaining nut and the locking ring. The inner nut should have a little *** on it that sticks through a hole in the locking ring.

I don't think he's in deep enough just looking at it.

Hub will come off once you get the wheel bearing nuts out. The spindle itself is bolted to the knuckle behind.

Here is basically what you will have when you pull the hub and brake disk off (as an assembly).

Okay so this is what I've got out so far. So it seems I need the retaining nuts out next? And the retaining washer(with the holes in it?) How do I go about removing those cause that's what I'm stuck on. Not sure how I got the spanner nut out without the tool, it just kinda pulled out. Sorry if this is frustrating, trying to learn the the terminology for this stuff is proving a bit overwhelming for me.

I believe what you have there is just the automatic locking hub assembly. Looking close at your pictures, it looks like the locking ring I pointed out is still in there. Is there a shim or a washer or something in front of your spanner nuts? I don't see any notches for the spanner socket to fit in. Maybe the auto lockers are different. It's been since about 96-97 since I had an auto apart. I would dig around and see if that is a shim or washer or something next in the stack. If you haven't pulled the nuts out yet, you have some more digging to do.

Sorry wish I could be more help.

Well it does but I'm still stuck here. I'm to the point now seemingly where I should have 4 slots on my spindle nut where I need the spindle socket. But I only have 1 slot, like in my first picture. This is where my confusion is coming from because I haven't seen anything like it. Am I not far enough into the process to pull the nut yet? And if not what needs to be done? Thank you all for your help. Everything is much appreciated.
