My truck has over 250k mi on it with the original un-rebuilt C6 and 6.9. I've changed the fluid and filter in the C6 twice in the 100k that i've owned the truck. Aside from a little hard shifting when cold, i havent noticed any degradation in the tranny since i've owned it. Towed a 8-9k lb trailer with it last night and not a problem. Its got 300 miles ahead of it this weekend with the same trailer and a ton of steep grades. Do these things all last forever or did i get some sort of freak trans?

Im sure i just cursed myself and it'll blow up on the first grade this weekend, but what the heck i got a ZF sitting in the garage ready to go.

You'll probably blow the TC before you grenade the gears. They are pretty stout for sure. The only thing I don't like are the 3-pin aluminum planetary's (at least that's what was on the truck I had). When I had my C6 rebuilt, I used 6-pin steel planetary's.

I only have had on and it was rebuilt 4 times in less than 5k. You can obviously tell the rebuilder was a retard. Since i have had it rebuilt by a competent person it had lated 4 seasons so far behind a 429 in a pulling truck

C6 is one tough SOB, just don't lug it, shift it down, keep it cool. Do you have an aux cooler on it?

Every thing is stone stock, no aux cooler just the factory one. When i first got the truck i used to let it shift on its own which meant lugging the hell out of it in 3rd up the grades. I've since learned the art of banging the thing into 2nd as soon as the rpm's start dropping and the pyro starts creeping up.

Thing really needs some in between gears though, oh yeah and an OD with the 4.10 ring and pinion

I had one with 288,000 miles on it before needing a rebuild (slipping in second). They are very happy if you keep them cool. I put an extra deep pan on it for more fluid volume. No issues with ground clearance in the truck.

I had an f100 with a straight 6 with 450k on them and both ran without anyproblems. The body rotted off andi couldn't afford to replaace then so it went to scrap. I do miss that truck. I think the fluid was changed 3 times in its life but it never had a problem.

Mine was rebuilt at 166k, but it was the PO that did it. I never heard why it was rebuilt. (I know it was because he showed me the reciept, and it was VERY shiny compared to everything else.)

196,000 on mine, I change the fluid every 50,000 miles.
Around my neck of the woods the trany will shift a zillion times, as there's a lot of stop signs and traffic lights. :puke:
It has a cooler, I just hope it keeps clicking along > I might only put 8,000 a year on it.

I have heard many people knock them(mainly because of no od) but my dad had one behind a built 429 that would pull the front tires off of the ground and he put a whole lot of tough miles(it served as a wrecker/racer/dd)on it. I will say he ate 3 c6's up, one every 6 months, before he finally put an extra cooler on it though. after the cooler he ran that truck hard for about 3-4 years and he said it still shifted like new when he got rid of it. this was when I was a baby.

I actually know the guy that has it now and he still has that same c6 in there. this is at least 18 years later. the truck doesnt get driven much anymore but when it does get drove it will still leave two sets of dual black marks in the asphalt for as long as you have the balls to hold the go pedal.

I love my C-6 truck the only thing i dont love is non overdrive, but i feel that with the lower stall converter the rpm will be more standable, mine has no telling how many miles on it, and the previous owner towed real heavy all over the country for years with it, it hauled a camper across the country and, a flatbed trailer with 12 large rolls of hay up long mountians and the damn thing still works great, shifts fine every time:D

get one stuck, rock back and forth wot in high range for about 22 minutes, and you will kill a c6. the second one I did this to didnt grab reverse one time until the big cammed 11.1 460 was just passing 6500. the c6 died immediately.
