OK, so I'm looking for a quick, cheap, simple method of pumping WVO out of collection barrels.

Note that I said PUMPING - not sucking. I've seen people's vaccum tank "super suckers", and that is NOT what I'm looking for. It requires too many parts that I don't have and couldn't get easily to put one together.

So, what kind of PUMPS are people using for collecting their WVO? I tried one of these

and I wasn't impressed. It was almost impossible to get it primed, and even once it was it didn't move the oil very fast - probably not more than a half a gallon a minute or so. On top of that, although it says it draws 800 Watts, it kept making my 800 Watt (continuous - 1600 Watts peak) power inverter kick out.

I'd like to find one that is self-priming that won't break the bank.

Ideas or suggestions anyone?

What's on the sucker system You can't get? I made mine with free parts except the vacuum hose. I even run a vacuum relief valve connected directly to the vacuum pump on My truck so while I drive I get the sucker tank ready.

Well, a tank that will hold up under vacuum for one thing. Preferably one big enough to hold 55+ gallons.

That's one of the main reasons I prefer a pumping system - I can pump into 55 gallon drums...

What about a standard barrel pump... the kind you turn by hand?

I thought about that. I've never used one. Do they self-prime pretty well? Are they hard to crank? I'm thinking maybe I could put some kind of 12v motor on one...

I don't intend to make cranking one a regular part of my oil collecting process...

Believe Me You don't want to pump by hand, specially if You pick up many gallons at the time. You'll come back to the truck and pull off the steering wheel with Your hand when You are done.

If the problem is a container just get Yourself a water heater tank from a plumbing store. They have bad heaters with good tanks for free and You can connect a vacuum pump to this with enough to pull all 55gallons out of the drum. The most You'll spend is on a couple valves and some vacuum hose You can get for cheap at ace hardware. You can run a air compressor hose from the vacuum pump on the engine to the tank and recharge the vacuum in case You need more inches to pull the oil from a large drum. As a vacuum pump at home You can get the pump out of a fridge or freezer and use it to pull all the inches You need out of the tank to use it at the oil pick-up.

See no big budget to do it. Hope this helps.

that is not the fun way to go by hand, trust me on that one. they are useful and you can get them cheep from harbor freight. i think they are half what everyone else wants for one. that was my plan to add a motor to one because they can pull a vacume from the bottom of a 55 gal barrel without a problem and pump a good volume when going.

i actually have a pulley to add to mine but that is as far as i got. i bought a cheep cast one from a hardware store. trouble i ran into was the shaft is some odd size that is not metric or standard so my machinist friend lathed it out to match whatever it was.

i was going to mount it to a board with an electric motor. the other idea i thought about chasing was the electric motor hooked up to a converted engine oil pump. you can get a cheep cheby one for around 20. drill and tap the inlet and outlet for fittings and add motor. gear pumps are great for pulling vacuum to self prime and can build some serous pressure.

U can always try to have your supplier put your waste oil into 5gallon gas cans for you. Thats what i'm doing right now. I take them home where I pour them into a 300 gallon overhead tank. It is a little hard climbing a latter with a 5 gallon gas can though. From there it gravity flows through a series of filters into a 55 gallon drum. From there I use a hand pump from Harbour Freight to pump it into my truck. I used my hand pump at my supplier at first doing 55 gallons at a time, killed my shoulder and arms. I do like the ideal of the gas powered pump though. I think I'll keep my eyes open for one.
