1695# is the exact weight of a 6V53T. The 6V53 (NA) comes in a bit less @ 1495#.

How much power does the 6V53T make? Would it make sense to put that in instead of a cummins?

They came in a number of different trims but a common highway unit was 223 HP @ 2500 RPM. I have worked on marine trimmed units that were 350 HP+.
Here's a cool video of one in a '79 plowing snow. Being a 2 cycle you really would want to be wearing hearing protection at those revs :eek::D

How much better is the 6V53T compared to the IDI we have now? I mean a turboed IDI isnt a slouch?

Well,the man from the frozen north figured it out....I don't know if a detroit is better but I just love the sound.I get in my Detroit kick every few months.I wish I could find a scattered engine for a mock up to just see if I could fit it in without having to majorly modify anything(Like remove the AC)

The great thing about a detroit is they are as simple if not more simple as our IDI's plus there is no shortage of parts.They are pretty standardized among familys.53,71,92,149.And I know you can put jakes on pretty much any 71 series.I think there is a setup for a 53 series.Hmmm,Ford with a detroit twin turbo and Jakes(REAL jakes not a fake exhaust brake).

Maybe the front axle set-up from this "parts truck" F 450 with the straight axle is what you are wanting to hold the weight. Then just build the front leaf spring to the strenght needed?

The down side to 2 cycle detroit is that they are peaky in torque and loud. When I was younger I built these for our logging equipment. Saying that I always wanted a 4/53 in a short box just for grins.

how can you stand listening to them things?tghe guy next door built a truck with i think a 6v53?and man was it loud.and he put an allison auto behind it.you could here in coming for 4 miles.and id bet he would have what you needed for your project as he loves detroits.

I've never seen what the big complaint is with the engine braking is with an IDI? I pull a pretty darn heavy 5er ( 10k ) in some nice steep hills and I've always thought the thing had plenty of engine braking with the proper gear selection even without one of those exhaust blockers. I've never found myself wanting for a jake.

Just face it, you just want to hear that screamin' jimmy :D:rotflmao

If the sound is what you're after you need to stick with the 53 series. They rev higher. Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure the non turbo model ran at higher revs than the turbo one.

I've been trying to find information on a silver series 53, but I don't think they made them. The silver series engines were unique in that they all had a turbo, and once turbo pressure exceeded the blower pressure the blower would freewheel. This helped to increase top end. I'm wondering if the mechanism to make this happen could be fitted to a different engine. I believe username IHWilly here knows his detroits, but I haven't seen anything from him in a while.

higher revs? it's whatever you set the screw to. Any governer you buy will have the no load rpm on it. The load limit screw is 2inch from boss to end of screw inside gov... and idle is once again whatever you want it. For setting max rpm, we just run aground into some sand at low tide. go wide open and let me adjust it. At high tide we float away :)
silver were just the v92. Okay engine, they tried to do one better than the 71's but it's sure hard to beat the 71 series. you don't see as many marine v92's as the longevity just wasn't there.

freight train, as long as your going unrealistically large....
My company will have a pair of 16v149's in a few months, probably pretty cheap.

or better yet, take a look at the MAK engine picture I posted in the 'big diesels' forum.
Just weld some wheels to it and sit in the V, but wear your seatbelt so the turbo doesn't suck you in.

If you were closer FREIGHTRAIN, I could hook you up with a mockup engine. They do have jakes for 53 series. You can turn one all day at 3100rpm and never hurt it.
I have given this some thought over the years, twin turbo, build a bypass blower plate as the turbo 92 series has, N75 injectors instead of N45, balance the lower end, you can even mess with the intake windows in the liners for more top end power.

The reason the 71 series is so reliable is that they are dry liner, less thermal shock and no chance of coolant leaking into the crankcase.
