Scott why fix it up to let someone else drive it? I understand the frustration of dumping good money into a truck, only to have something else go wrong, but there comes a point where you've fixed all the bad things and can enjoy the fuits of your labor.

Tom, thanks for checking in. How ya been?

Gruss, I'm on the fence about this for that reason exactly. As I said before I'm tired of everything being a problem with this thing. It still needs suspension bushings all the way around & shocks, a steering pump, front bumper, new drivers seat & I'm still having idle problems with the chip. Swamps can make it idle right but EGT's are out of control. Bean's can't get it to idle but it runs great with good egt's. Then there's the boost pressure that won't go over 29psi even on the 160 setting. Motor aside, what's left to do isn't hard or expensive so I think to myself.....rebuild (which could aleviate the chip & boost issues) & finish what needs fixed. BUT, the boss is getting tired of seeing me throw money at this truck & has already told me to "just buy a new truck" While I can't afford a new truck I understand what she means & wonder if she's right.
I really could justify having a dually now between my work situation (could pull a 4 car trailer with it) & pulling the monster 5'er. I'm not upside down in the truck as far as money & if I put a new motor in it or fix this one, I could probably turn a profit. I guess it all hinges on what's really wrong with it at this point in time.
I hate to admit this but I think alot of the problems I've had resulted from buying a truck I couldn't go see first & not giving myself enough time to evaluate what it needed. I was excited about getting a PSD & let that & the price "blind" me to some of the problems. Ya get what you pay for I guess. Just have to decide if it's worth sticking with it or moving to something else....more carefully.

What is involved in pulling the motor? Should I pull it? I've heard the cab has to come off/up. What if I went out the front? Does that work?

Scott...When Tonka pulled his eng out....straight out the front after the radiator was removed had plenty of room and the cab stayed intact..

..actually quite easier than my OBS and I did mine solo.

Gonna need to either support the tranny or pull it first, then it just becomes like any other engine comming out.....just heavier :D so make sure that your rigging can support the 1200 odd pounds of iron.

2. What is included in a long block?

complete engine-oil pan to valve covers....just swap over bolt on accesories alt brkt etc......

I wonder if the low pressure oil pump [in the front cover] didn't frag :dunno

Isn't the low pressure pump pretty low down? If I popped a head somehow, I would have antifreeze everywhere instead of oil, right?

it comes out of the top very easy like geonc was saying. if your head poped it might not give you milkshake oil, i have a perfect example siting on a farm that you heard running super great. that head/block is super super super super warped to the point of being able to see it with your eye's and i didnt have milkshake oil, so that could go either way.

maybe the failure was a hyrdolock due to an overfuel condition witch then in turn failed a rod/head/piston due to either an injector fault, pcm/chip fault.

thats my theory

you coulda yanked it over to apple, but thats a bit of a haul for you, whos shop is it at, id like to take a peak at it maybe

Update: It's toast

Had to meet up with one of my drivers today right across from the shop where the truck is sitting. Now that all the oil has stopped dripping I got a good look & felt around. Left side of the motor is soaked in oil.......However the right side is where the block is cracked:mad: . Just in front of the motor mount & the oil pan is all buldged out just under the crack. I stopped by there without the camera but I'll get some pictures when it comes home tommorrow.

Joey, it's at KAR Automotive next to the RV storage place on Eutaw.

Guess that's worst case scenario. About par for my luck. If it was raining *****, I'd get hit with a ****.-cuss

Dang Scott! That's terrible. Best of luck figuring out the best course of action. Guess the dark side has it's problems too.

that site also shows a 5.0L IDI ???

from your description it sounds like it threw a rod. if you can replace the engine and sell the truck for a profit more power to you but unless you buy a new truck you dont know what you're getting next time. with this truck you know what you have and it's all new or rebuilt.

good luck.

Hey Scott,
That sucks! I know we talked and you have a lot going on, but if it were me...I would get a short block, have your heads checked and swap the motor.

Mel, more than I expected

69, I know what you're saying buy I think I can have a dealer that I haul for purchase something on my behalf from the auction, have a mechanical inspection, then purchase through a dealer with some type of warrenty all for about $500 above auction price which is a damn good deal. Might be worht it at that point. But I know what I have already to some degree. Can't say 100% or wouldn't be facing this now. The wife is really pushing for something newer & under warrenty.

Joe all I can say at this point is that may be all I can afford to do right now. I got 11000.00 in other repairs this week for the big trucks. That is by far my most costly week in business to date since 1996. That doesn't include the SD because it isn't company owned!!!
