Early 90's IDI Uhaul truck Value W/PICS!

Going to look at an early 90's IDI Uhaul truck soon. Pickup truck based unit, so its a cab and chassis truck. Still has the box on the back, IDI Auto. I am guessing on the year, might be a brick nose. less than 65,000 miles. Running driving unit. Was used by a grocery store for pick ups and deliveries after its time with Uhaul. Current owner bought it at an Auction on a whim and was the only bidder. They used it for a year renovating their bar, and now want to move it.

I have no use for the box, whats its value? I can buy the whole truck for $1000, and I am told the truck body parts are solid minimal to zero rust.

Its a DRW truck, tires are good.

I have only seen it from the back side months ago...

Looks like there is some rust under the hood and in the door jamb.

Truck has sat most of the summer, they went out this week, let the glow plug warm and it fired right up.

the nice thing about uhaul trucks is they knew about the cavitation problems. They used pink coolant when they were in service with uhaul that was sca precharged. All the F series trucks with IDI's were bricknose. The later IDI's were in the E series chassis. The later OBS F-series were 460 BBF.

1000 is a killer deal. I bought a uhaul truck from its 2nd owner to transplant into my 91 crew dually years ago. I had all maintenance records with the truck. Depending on how long ago it went out of service, uhaul might still have service records for the truck.

They were all C6 transmissions. The engine itself, they had an extra oil tank for extra capacity and heavy duty tranny cooler for the c6.

What would they have used for gear ratio? Sterling rear or D60?

Unless Uhaul had something custom the rear ends would have been Ford/Sterling 10.25". For $1000 it's a steal no matter what, worst case scenario is you don't like it and you could part it or sell it whole and at least get your money back. Gear ratio, DRW trucks rarely had 3.55 or numerically lower than that, usually they were 4.10s, I doubt Uhaul would have wanted to give people 3.55 because they were meant to be loaded and you could go faster (although the performance would suck till you got rolling) with 3.55s. No idea on the TIB or D60 in the front.

FWIW I've never seen a U-Haul 4x4...doesn't mean they didn't exist, but every U-Haul of any make I've seen was a 2WD. I drove an E-350 IDI/C6 once, and it definitely had 4.10 gears...it pulled pretty well but was right at the governor at 70 mph.

FWIW...

Here is what my Dad was able to fin out about it.

Speedo reads 61218, probably + 100K, who knows, trans is "G", (auto),axle is
"65", 16 X 6 rims, body is "CJ8", 11,000 GVW. Only "Outside" rust is on front of
hood, inner rust on rockers . Other than that, the body looks very good, box is
in good shape, Randy Matzke painted the sides to cover up the store name. Store
in Oxford had it after it was a U Haul. He said he went out a week or so ago,
AND IT STARTED GOOD, glow plugs must be good shape. Both batteries were new in
July 2009. Interior is very good, just needs cleaning. FACTORY A/C. Tires have
some good tread left, maybe 50/65 per cent.

Well, I picked the bad boy up, its a bit rustier under neath than I thought. Its still a solid ride though.

Thinking of selling the box come summer, and putting a low boy type ramp back for car hauling. Anyone ever build one? I think its too good a unit to part out.

Can you tell us what the rpm stops at. Might have a big bus or dump truck low governerd injection pump. They only rev to about 2800 where our pickup truck injection pumps rev up to 3800 rpm. Differant fueling curve and gonerner springs. I can tell its got a C6 auto trans by the vacuum switch on the drivers side of the injection pump. Thats a great strong trans too. It just doesn't have a lockup mode in it. Otherwise it will run just about forever. Nice rig for the money. Good thing it didn't have the 10 lug wheels. If it did thats a way differant weight class rig and the lowest gears available are 5:13....

Havent driven it much, just around the sub division (if you can call it a sub division that is)

I am sure its a 2800 rpm unit though.

Very little smoke, fires up and runs nice, even cold.

I need a ramp bed for it though.
