    Electric cooling fan

Mel, thanks that is really helpful info. Do the fans cycle on and off with the 185 switch in the head? if it is idling for and extended period of time, like 30 minutes?

    Electric cooling fan

Thanks for the info. I thought those temps might be a little low. What type of temp sensor does the DCControls use? Where did you locate the sensor?

    Electric cooling fan

If you have made an electric fan conversion where and how did you install a temperature sensor? What temp range have you found works best? I was thinking on at 200 and off at 185? Is that so cold that once they turn on they will never turn off? I plan on controlling both fans with a single relay...

    Motor Oil Spec

I agree that IDI's are probably not too picky about lube oil. With such low HP to displacement and no emissions controls they really shouldn't care. But I was just curious about Fords recommendations. 20-30 years ago the use of single grade oil in diesels was the norm. Thanks for the replies.

    Motor Oil Spec

I searched here and couldn't find an answer. My truck did not have the operators manual for a diesel engine. What were Fords requirements for motor oil? I know that we all have our opinions about what is best and maybe there is not one correct answer but what did Ford say in 1991 was the correct...

Hang onto your old heater cores!

I have a question about this reported electrolysis. If it is truly an issue then are these aluminum radiators that seem to be a popular replacement going to succumb to the same short life? I would think that AL heater cores failing early is just poor quality not electrolysis. Since AL cooling...

    1991 super duty rear ratio

Towcat, That is really incredible! I guess I understand the IDI can get away with that because they are such low HP at about 25HP/liter. I tend to be conservative with engine operation. But I am used to the marine world where 45HP/liter is common and 70+HP/liter is not unusual. Thanks for the...

    1991 super duty rear ratio

Towcat, Just unload a bunch of scrap metal yesterday. My truck was 10,400 lbs. with a normal load of tools etc. in the utility body and the bed empty. So just about the same as yours. What sort for fuel mileage does your carrier get with the 5.13 gears?

    1991 super duty rear ratio

The OP stated the utility body. I was only making the point that my opinions about what makes the truck better can be different from yours. Negative comments like "downgrading capabilities" and "a mistake was made" are only an opinion and not helpful. Others may view it as upgrading capabilities...

    1991 super duty rear ratio

I am not sure where you are going with this. There is not much tare weight difference between an f350 DRW and a f super duty with my utility body and crane on either chassis. A 150 or 250 would not accommodate the utility body with crane that we have. I don't feel like I made any mistakes. I...

    1991 super duty rear ratio

towcat, I will keep all the necessary info and post here when it is complete. I see your carrier is basically the same set up. We are only looking at about $450 worth of parts for the gear set and shim and bearing kit. It should not need the pinion bearings but it will save time and be easier...

    1991 super duty rear ratio

Al, I totally agree with your comments and thanks for your input. Installing a different rear was not something that interested me and I would have probably just lived with the high revs. A 4.10 gear set will be a great ratio for this truck. After using the calculator on www.ringandpinion.com I...

    1991 super duty rear ratio

I don't think I am interested in a trade but tell me what you have. Mine is super straight no rust, clean, not abused, fleet maintained, and 100% stock w/106k miles. The only down side is no A/C but we will probably install that in the spring. I don't think the truck is wrong for my application...

    1991 super duty rear ratio

I really wish I could purchase the R&P from all three of these company's. All of them were helpful and professional. They all have parts for pre 1998 Dana 80 rears. It is a busy season for us at work so the F-super duty is really a winter project. It doesnt really need anything except a paint...

    1991 super duty rear ratio

Just to clarify it is a 1991 F-super duty DRW chassis cab. It now has a 10.5' utility body with a 4k lbs. capacity crane. For my purpose I like the larger storage of the DRW utility body and the crane. As I said I am not interested in towing heavy equipment etc. The truck is in great condition...

    1991 super duty rear ratio

Ok now I am totally confused. I have contacted two different gear sellers. I gave them the info on the data tag from the rear. They say I can use aftermarket R&P down to 4.10 or 3.73 with a "thin" ring gear. They say they would except a return if it didn't fit but that is a big headache if it...

    1991 super duty rear ratio

I guess I need to do more research because I have no idea what a brownie is. Or what it would cost to purchase and install. Maybe I should start looking for a junkyard rear??? And keep my options open instead of just living with the high revs. Thanks for the additional info!

    1991 super duty rear ratio

Thanks for the quick replies. That is bad news for me. I was hoping a gear change would be the solution. It sounds like I am going to have to live with the high revs for now. I don't think an overdrive unit is going to fit my budget. Does anyone know what is different about the older Dana 80's...

    1991 super duty rear ratio

Hi all! I am brand new here and to a recently purchased 1991 F350 7.3 super duty DRW 5 spd with a utility body. The current rear ratio is 5:13. I will do mostly highway miles. I tow occasionally and never anything over 7k lbs. I will not have a lot of weight in the utility body about 1k lbs...
