Axle is out, leaking oil looks odd...see pictures

Ok, I have looked around on the chance that I might need a hub and sure hope I wont as that seems like it would be a stealership part only, cant find that at napa, o'reilly or autozone. Hopefully since that that is not in the area where the bearings are, it wont matter...

Axle is out, leaking oil looks odd...see pictures

Ok, so the decision has been determined for me on the outer race, it was chewed up in places by the failing bearing, so will be replacing that one at least. Once I had all the grease off, saw a scratch in the hub, perhaps from the same bits of metal? To my finger, is not very deep, perhaps...

Axle is out, leaking oil looks odd...see pictures

Ok. I am a bit confused, pardon the questions/statements to clarify. We have talked about this being both a sleeve or the inner part of a standard seal. Is there a way to identify which one this is? I ask because the sleeve would indicate damage to the tube that I need to learn about and...

Axle is out, leaking oil looks odd...see pictures

Looking here: http://www.thedieselstop.com/forums/f24/rear-axle-seal-98685/ Perhaps that is just part of the standard seal? I am not sure I want to remove if it is a quick sleeve (or speedi-sleeve like here: http://www.chicagolandmgclub.com/photos/sleeve01/) because that might mean it is...

Axle is out, leaking oil looks odd...see pictures

I seem to have issues with pictures. Just re-attached. I tried to pull out the seal that was left in the hub, does not seem to be budging... is it safe to pound on the bearing to force it out? How do I get the piece of the axle tube? Puller? Pry bar?

Axle is out, leaking oil looks odd...see pictures

    1) Axle out - DONE 2) Hub off - DONE 3) Outside wheel bearing - DONE 4) Axle seal - Stuck So the hub did not slide off, it actually was quite hard to pull off and required some back and forth, kind of like a slide hammer only softer to work it loose. Once it was off, think I know why, but...

Axle is out, leaking oil looks odd...see pictures

Ok. I was concerned that there would be water somewhere that I would not be able to get to easily, locked up in middle of tubes or deep in differential. Some specific questions if you had a moment as originally I was only pulling the hub originally to change the axle seal: 1) Other than...

Axle is out, leaking oil looks odd...see pictures

Just acquired the vehicle, it has had a light sprinkle of desert rain, when I drove it home... but that does not mean they were not using it that way. How do I clean out the water and get things right again? The brakes were supposed to be good, but they are not, and the list goes on...

Axle is out, leaking oil looks odd...see pictures

Thanks for the quick reply. So that is not welcome news, but I was wondering about that possibility. Is there an easy way to confirm this? And if so, what corrective actions do I need to take if that is the case?

Axle is out, leaking oil looks like coffee with creamer...see pictures So, going at this slow, learning as I go. Pulled the axle off: 1) didnt expect an 0-ring to seal, thought there would be rtv or something based on other answers. 2) oil leaking does not look like axle grease...

Rear Hub Removal - 1 ton, full float axle question

Thanks for the info. Will pick up some of the thread sealer and the black rtv. Spending time on youtube, found this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eucSInVHZ-w I realize it is a bit newer truck, but sterling axle, and it looks pretty much the same visually as my truck with the exception of...

Rear Hub Removal - 1 ton, full float axle question

Hello, Getting ready to attempt an axle seal for the first time and had a few questions after research online: 1) After removing the bolts at the end of the axle, it says to remove the hub, will i need a puller always, or just sometimes 2) when replacing the axle seal, is it readily...

Booster going out? or maybe its the abs valve

Maybe I am calling it something that is different on a diesel, but isnt there a valve that sits between rear and front brakes? I am at work so cant go crawl under truck, but thought that thing was what he was he was talking about. I have done a lot of google foo and was wondering, since i...

Thanks! I was reading in the forums somewhere that there was a better design with an improved oil thrower, wonder if this is what they were referring to.

Booster going out? or maybe its the abs valve

I think I may have tested that without knowing it was a check valve. I started the car, let it idle, then turned it off. Then went to booster and pulled that at the end of the line out. I heard air sucking back into the booster so think maybe it was holding. Either way, $5 sounds like a...

Booster going out? or maybe its the abs valve

Nope. Talked with owner of a local diesel shop, he said to take care of the wheel cylinder first as it will need to be done and will help test rest of system by eliminating that. Also, he is so busy, won't be able to do more until next week. He did say booster is holding vacuum, tested...

91 f350 7.3 idi turbo crew cab - new owner - odd vibration when driving

Thanks for the advice, understood and received. I have decided on all things safety first, working on getting brakes solved now. It is a bit disappointing on a new truck, but will get it going.

Booster going out? or maybe its the abs valve

Check valve? Is that something to release the vacuum when finished? I do get a firm pedal if I step on it fast, but it does not have much stopping power. That is why I "originally" thought it was the leaking rear wheel cylinder that caused the issue, thought it was slipping. However, the...

Booster going out? or maybe its the abs valve

While it seems to be stopping ok, I have not tried to panic stop nor do I wish too. Shop near my office says there is a problem that is outside their services (ie, it is not wheel cylinders, pads, drums, etc). Doing my own research before posting, I think it is likely to be the brake booster...

changing priorities for just a bit. brake issue seems to not be a leaky wheel cylinder but more serious and shop advised me not to drive it. will pause here on this one and open a thread on that separately. David

So, an update. First, I gave up trying to diagnose the u joints. I did not see any play but I am definitely learning and youtube only gets you so far. Pep boys gave me a free inspection, they said i have a bad u joint, but also transmission mount, driver rear axle seal, rear wheel cylinders...
