Joined the ranks of the turbo charged

And for those who are curious about the Banks style adapter; I used the stock IP front cover as a template to cut a piece of 1/4" aluminum, then tapped a 1"NPT hole in the middle of it, screwed in a brass 90 (being careful of how far it protruded on the backside), and ran 1" tubing back to the...

Joined the ranks of the turbo charged

Here's how I did mine. Kinda hard to get a good picture in there but; I took a piece of 1" pipe, about 6" long, and cut one end off at a 45. Then made a hole in the down pipe, and welded the tubing in at 45 degrees, with the tip protruding about 1/2" into the inside of the down pipe. The 45...

    Turbo Clearance issue

When I installed the 085 into my truck recently, the turbo has about 1" of clearance to the firewall, but slips down over studs, and I couldn't get enough clearance to get the turbo to slip onto the studs. I took a 2x4 and a sledge hammer and just beat the firewall back about 1/2. It moved...

Joined the ranks of the turbo charged

So I picked up an old ATS 085 turbo kit about a month ago, and finally got it installed and working properly. Along with the turbo, I also put in a boost gauge and EGT gauge. Aside from the bloody knuckles from clearancing the firewall and bruised torso from laying across the top of the...

    Cold advance amount?

Mine is on a toggle, and I only use it when the engine is cold. I've heard it advances the timing anywhere from 3 to 6 degrees. If you're timing was set right, advancing it wouldn't gain you anything, and besides that, the cold start advance only seems to change the timing up to about 1000 rpm...

    DT466 realities...

Are you running a straight axle under the DT? Think about the forces on a TTB front end. All the weight of the front end is pulling down on the cross member where the I-beams bolt to the cross member. There's got to be at least an extra 1000 pounds of force pulling down on that cross member. So...

What I missed when I did my swap; rebuild the oil cooler while you can get to it.

    ATS airbox or BHAF?

Something else to consider; You loose the CDR if you ditch the ATS box. I already have a RDT. I made my own adapter that bolts to the front of the IP cover like a Banks adapter. I'm going to weld a bung into the down pipe before install and plug the RDT into the exhaust.

    ATS airbox or BHAF?

I found this link that gives the air filter #'s for all 3 ATS kits.

    ATS airbox or BHAF?

So I just picked up an old ATS 085 turbo setup for my truck. Only thing missing was the oil feed line for the turbo, and the air filter. Is it worth even using the ATS air box, or should I just ditch it, relocate some stuff, and make my own setup with a BHAF? The stock ATS filter size just...

    Good Deal on 6.9 IDI

Anybody else see this one yet? http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/pts/2994651187.html Good deal on a 6.9. The guy claims the IP is bad, but the symptoms sound more like a bad lift pump to me. And don't bother calling about the turbo; it's already sitting in my garage...:sly

    Will a 460 radiator work in a 7.3 idi

Here's a pic of a 460 radiator sitting in front of the tall/skinny version IDI radiator.......It's a big difference in size.

    C6 to ZF5 swap

Switching a ZF from 2wd to 4wd is possible, but not worth the trouble since you have to disassemble the whole trans to do it. Your truck should have a BW1356 transfer case, which will bolt right to a 4wd ZF5. Some of the earlier trucks had a BW1345 (like I used behind my ZF5); they bolt up just...

    Started my DT360 swap yesterday

The one I saw on a Cummins conversion was not very precise looking - the guy cut the notches with a hack saw and said it worked just fine. My understanding of how the magnetic hall-effect switch works with the tach is that every time the 12v signal is broken 53 times, the tach counts it as 1...

    Started my DT360 swap yesterday

I don't think 1 tooth off would be enough to worry about. I've seen guys swap from a IDI to Cummins and use both a gear on the balancer and just cutting notches in the balancer and both were successful using the IDI tach sensor.

    Started my DT360 swap yesterday

My plan for the tach sensor; First of all, the calibration is set inside the tach gauge itself, and I don't believe it can be changed. The IDI IP gear has 106 teeth on it and spins half the RPM of the crank. So the IDI sensor could be used on the crank shaft of the DT on something with 53...

    Swap 6.9 or 7.3 for a 460 in 75' F350 crewcab dually?

I took out a perfectly good 460/c6 out of my truck to replace it with a 7.3/zf5. I did it because I had my heart set on a diesel and manual trans. I did the math, and when you factor in the higher maintenance costs of the diesel, the diesel is hardly cheaper to operate than the gasser. I figured...

    whos got a clock?

There's a tech article on FTE. IIRC, there's a piece of wiring that goes between the plug out of the back of the clock and a plug found i the factory harness. I was missing this piece of wiring, so I just spliced the wires into the radio wiring. I don't remember what the colors are but they...

    Started my DT360 swap yesterday

? All I can say is; mine looks identical to all the other ones hanging off of DT360's I've seen on the internet It has a Bosch tag with serial # on it, but no mention of MW or A.

    Started my DT360 swap yesterday

Mine has a plunger style lift pump (similar to a Cummins) with a built in hand pump for priming the fuel system. You running the stock IP? All of them that I have seen have the Bosch MW pump, although there are supposedly some out there with a A pump - I think it was a California only emissions...

    Possible T19 to ZF5 swap...

That makes sense about the floor pans. I kept my 1345 as well, but used the shifter off of the 1356, modified the linkage, and hacked a new hole in the floor. I pretty much just made work what I already had.

    Possible T19 to ZF5 swap...

There's 2 versions of ZF5 floor pans. I believe both versions are shown above. The difference is the location of the transfer case shifter. I used the floor pan and shifter out of a 89, where the shifter comes through an extra hole in the floor just to the left of the floor pan, so my truck has...
