    Trans Temp too cold?

My truck didn't originally come with an E4OD, so I'm running an aftermarket controller. The temperature permissive for TC lockup is adjustable using the tuning software.

    Trans Temp too cold?

Normally TC lockup is disabled below 100F. I recently had to drop this setting because the converter would never lockup at all.

    Trans Temp too cold?

Looking for some opinions here. I rebuilt the E4OD transmission a couple years ago and it's been working fine. At the time, I installed a large transmission cooler and bypassed the rad cooler completely. The failure that brought about the overhaul was an internal assembly error leading to line...

    80-91 tilt column rebuild

Somebody sure spent a bit of time brainstorming this idea. At a first glance, one could say it's a terrible design, and ford was too cheap to install a conventional U-joint. Never the less, it seems to hold up just fine. And like just about everything else on an old Ford truck, you can adjust...

    80-91 tilt column rebuild

Are you sure it's not simply the ignition switch knocked out of alignment? If that checks out, have a closer look at the switch assembly. Sometimes the aluminum crimps that holds the switch together can come loose.

    80-91 tilt column rebuild

That part of the shaft is collapsible into the column. It's normally quite stiff, but you should be able to pull out enough length to properly attach the steering box shaft. EDIT: I never took a dedicated photo, but if you look in the background of this one, you can see the telescoping section...

    Monroe gas Magnum

I tried bilsteins on mine and they were too stiff for me. They were ok on the front, but the rear was so light, I would actually get axle bounce on some bumps, even on pavement. It was brutal on gravel roads or potholes. If I was hauling a camper or some other weight it might have been ok. I...

    80-91 tilt column rebuild

I thought I already posed photos of this but I guess not. Here's how the U-joint goes together in case anyone is wondering. I searched the web for any photos before tearing mine apart an came up empty.

    80-91 tilt column rebuild

The "U-Joint" (air quotes, since it's not technically a true U-joint), can also be adjusted for tightness. That's what the locknut does. It doesn't look very strong compared to modern columns that have actual U-joints, but I've never heard of one ever failing. And like almost everything else on...

    Bla bla bla

They were cool until they failed. And you still had to put on the lap belt separately. So when the motor failed, you had to buckle up twice every time you got in. And if you crashed, you had to unbuckled twice, as well. I'll admit that was before my time, but I came across older cars that still...

Wiring harness and thinking about selling

Hehe, I was waiting for someone to go full fummins...(Some say, once you go full fummins, you never come backLOL) As for brakes, it sounds like something is wrong. I agree lifts and big tires hurt towing performance but still. First, have a look at this thread. It shows what can go wrong with...

    Bla bla bla

For some reason threads like this give me a warm fuzzy feeling. "The E-brake on my 30-year old ford pickup stopped working" "Here's where you need to oil it." FIXED Of course, it's not always so simple, and I can attest to that, too. But the point is, you can fix them. Half the new cars...

    slightly different zf5 swap question

The centerline of the drivetrain will not change, so I see no reason you can't make the 2wd work on a 4wd. You might have to slide it back and drill new holes but that's not a big deal. Are you actually converting to 4wd, or keeping it 2wd? If staying 2wd, you should be golden.

    Another tire size question...

You guys have me thinking now, with all this talk of lower pressures. I'm spending a lot of time on dirt roads lately and the thought of running lower pressures is appealing (normally I air up/down as needed) Any comparison on tire life compared to the narrower stock size?

    Another tire size question...

I prefer the stock size, but I doubt the larger size would have any clearance issues.

    80-91 tilt column rebuild

If you're looking for ball bearings, you can try McMaster Carr. Their listings almost always have CAD drawings with detailed dimensions. I had a spare column to scavenge parts from, so I mix & matched until I had the best parts between the two. Most of the parts only needed a good cleaning in my...

So what did you do with your truck today?

Another few photos of the new sending unit, if anyone's curious. Apparently the "shower heads" are now available separately, but the source I found was too expensive to ship, so I just replaced the whole thing.

So what did you do with your truck today?

I discovered a cheat code on my truck. Apparently, you can access both fuel tank sending units without having to remove the tank, hack the bed floor, or even lift the bed. Tilting it to the passenger side worked like a charm (leave the passenger side bolts in loose to act like a hinge). I'm...

    80-91 tilt column rebuild

Seems to be only about 1/2" of axial slack. Still too much, but makes sense based on what I remember when tearing mine apart. You'll have to remove the signal switch assembly (white plastic piece). There are several Phillips head screws that hold it in place. The signal lever itself simply...

    80-91 tilt column rebuild

Here's some notes on the tilt mechanism. The hinge pins themselves are machined dowels that have to be removed with a machine threaded screw. I don't know the pitch, since it was just something I had in a junk box that happened to fit. The tilt ratchet itself is fairly robust, but I suppose...

    80-91 tilt column rebuild

Hmm. I'm looking through my photos and trying to figure out how 1 inch of axial movement is possible. The shaft can be pushed in slightly, if the retaining snap ring is dislodged. But it can't really be pulled out because the shaft is captured by the upper section of the column (the part that...

    80-91 tilt column rebuild

Uh...well, as it so happens I did this a few months ago. While I wouldn't call it easy to rebuild, it can be done. You also have to be really careful with this, because it's a complex assembly. How much time to you have? Because I have lots of photos. I was going to attempt a tutorial but ran...

    E4OD won't move from stop in D

Your truck will have two speed sensors (again, for anyone else reading this, 1992 up is different): 1. on the rear differential. This is for your rear antilock brakes and is not related to the transmission or cruise control. 2. at the tailshaft of the transmission (or transfer case, if 4wd)...

    E4OD won't move from stop in D

Hello, and welcome. I would take a closer look at the VSS, and the drive gear on the end of it. If the speedometer stopped working on a Pre 1992 truck, it means the cable physically stopped spinning (later ones are fully electronic). It could simply be that the speedometer gear has shredded...

Bolt down system for truck canopy

Yup, flex is an issue. I'm hoping the fiberglass will be able to move with the bed. I did try flexing the truck once to test articulation, but never got to the point of actually lifting a wheel (there's a pretty big ravine on the other side of that rock!). Front and rear stabilizer bars are...
