    '88 F250 ATS 088 Turbo Removal

+1 on taking out the lower pipes first. I have the same turbo setup and that's the only way I even attempt to remove the turbocharger. Drop the crossover pipe, then unbolt the lower connection of the Y-pipe from the passenger side exhaust manifold. If you're lucky, you'll be able to swing the...

    Oil in Coolant

I didn't have O-ring lube, but I always used some white lithium grease. And instead of using a press to assemble the cooler, I was able to use a dewalt hand clamp similar to this one: https://www.dewalt.ca/products/hand-tools/trigger-clamps/36-large-trigger-clamp/dwht83195 A big advantage is...

    Crack Free Dash Pad 80 - 86

They did go extinct, but they started cloning them: https://dashesdirect.com/product/1980-1986-f-150250350-ford-original-tooling-dash-pad/ Good to know OEM style dashes are available, but at that price I don't know how many will go for it. And since the reproduction dashes will have to be...

    Oil in Coolant

Finally, some good news. Long story short, there was still too much corrosion inside the aluminum headers, where the oil/coolant O-ring are. A small die grinder cleaned up the aluminum oxide and then I used fine sandpaper and scotch bright to finalize the finish. I was originally too afraid to...

    New Seats

If it were me, I'd look up the circuit from the Superduty pickup and see what rating fuse they have from the factory. Then wire it into a Key on circuit in your truck, using that rating of fuse. Might also want to check if they are powering the heater and motors separately. I rather like the...

    Oil level rising

I hate to ask the dumb question, but are you consistently checking the oil level at the same condition? Same parking spot, pointed the same direction, and at the same temperature? If you did your first check on a cold engine and then again on a hot engine, you will see a noticeably higher level.

"87" Ford 6.9 another hard starting question...

Plug your block heater in overnight and then try starting it. If you have a quick start with the engine warm, then you know its 99% still in your glow plug system. If you still have hard starting, then you may have a fuel drainback issue. There is a large electrical connector near the passenger...

    Oil in Coolant

Sad update. I've drained the expansion tank and within a week, there seems to be 1/4" of oil in there again. So it may be the cooler itself is leaking. So far there is nothing visible entering the oil. So the next questions are: Where can I get a good cooler bundle? Are the dorman aftermarket...

Getting harder to start. Slow cranks then faster cranks.

Wow, I didn't realize it was that much of a pain to get at that top bolt. It's been many years since I installed the current starter (mitsu), but all I can remember is having to use a fairly long extension. The trick was to get the ratchet between the end of the motor and the back of the engine...

Making the change over to Hydroboost.

Getting harder to start. Slow cranks then faster cranks.

I'm running the inline reduction style. Some of you may remember that it stuck on a few months ago for about 5 min while driving. I have a spare (same style) on the shelf but still haven't replaced the starter yet because it still seems to work fine!

Getting harder to start. Slow cranks then faster cranks.

Brushes in the starter may be getting stuck and/or worn out. Try tapping it with a hammer and see if it makes a difference.

    Speed Control Module

Electronics can fail without any visible indication on them. Semiconductors just let out the ghost sometimes (which is why so many of us prefer mechanical fuel injection). This is a strange one for me. So when you start from a standstill, how are you able to get through all the gears? In drive...

    Speed Control Module

Are you able to get 1st gear and 2nd gear, using the shift lever? If not, it means you have no 12V power to the transmission, which is the most common electronic malfunction. With no 12V power, you will get: 2nd in manual 1 or 2 4th gear in Drive Reverse will work normally but may engage harder...

    Oil in Coolant

I checked it again today after some short trips and the coolant in the rad is clearing up. Last couple of days, it was completely black under the rad cap. Today, it's showing red again. The coolant in the expansion tank is now all black on the surface. My biggest concern right now is to make...

    Oil in Coolant

Well, oil is getting pumped into the recovery tank. Still plenty of black oil under the rad cab but we'll have to see if the rad coolant clears up over the next few days. Engine oil still appears black, and not milky.

    Oil in Coolant

All back together and running but not yet sure if the problem is solved. I separated as much of the oil as I could from the coolant and put it back in. The rad is still full of oil, so I'm hoping the oil will work it's way out over the next several driving cycles so I can recover it from the...

    Oil in Coolant

Here's photos of the correct OEM gaskets. The orange sealer on here had to be scraped off the flanges on the side of the engine block. So whatever the stuff is, it works well. So just to recap, here's what I had to do for access to the cooler: 1. Unbolt power steering pump and set aside 2...

    Oil in Coolant

This next post comes with a disclaimer. I sometimes like to use permatex #3 aircraft gasket sealer. I'm not saying that this is best practice on a cooler reseal, but here's why I used it. 1. It has excellent oil resistance 2. It never fully cures, so there's no worry about chunks coming off...

    Oil in Coolant

As suggested, I cleaned up the areas where the O-rings are seated. There was a fair amount of crusty buildup on the oil/coolant seal, so maybe that's what the problem was. The black shaded areas are trace amounts of corrosion, but they are smooth. Most of the buildup was removed with the edge of...

    Oil in Coolant

Forgot to mention that I did drain some of the oil and no coolant came out with it. The truck was sitting cold for several days, so I'm pretty sure I would have seen something if coolant got in.

    Oil in Coolant

The end of the bundle looks ok, but there is some rust, which is a bit concerning. Three of the tubes were blocked. One of them was so tight with some crusty white stuff that I had to clear it with a drill bit (by hand). So at this point, I'm thinking to set up some kind of pressure test after...
