If you want, you can call the California DMV and ask them directly. Their calling service isn't great, but it's not the worst either. They'll likely put you on hold for 30-some minutes, but they can answer any questions you want. I used to call them all the time when I was shopping for vans...
Any diesel older than 1998 don't need to be smogged. You'll need to get your vehicle inspected when you first register it at the DMV, so as long as you aren't rolling coal, I'm 99% sure you'll pass the initial inspection. Then every year thereafter, you'll just get the typical re-registration...
If you have a good engine stand and standard tools, you can rebuild this yourself without much effort. I think all I had to buy was a set of micrometers and bore gauge, and I had everything else just in my current tool kit. http://www.nickpisca.com/diesel/engine/7-3-idi-engine-rebuild-process/
I wrapped my EM's on my van to try and reduce some of the heat transferring to the doghouse. Every little bit helps. When I'm hauling up a steep grade and getting 1100 deg EGT's, I can feel the heat through the doghouse near my accelerator pedal.
I used the orange orifice tube on my '88 van.
As for the tool, I just bought the thinnest harbor freight needle nose pliers, and used my bench grinder to make a groove on each side so that the tip had a tooth to catch the tube with.
When I was rebuilding my block last time, I drew up a diagram on the bolt sizes for the oil cooler for both the truck and vans. Here it is:
Source: http://www.nickpisca.com/diesel/engine/7-3-idi-torque-specs-and-bolt-dimensions-with-images/
The color denotes the van cooler bolts, and the...
You don't need a vise to separate the headers from the cooler. I just use a screwdriver. I have some pictures on my website:
http://www.nickpisca.com/diesel/engine/6-9-and-7-3-idi-oil-cooler-repair/
As for putting it back together, in that article, I have a video showing how to do it on a...
I think I tried both. One time, I put rtv to hold the paper gasket on the headers, and the other time, i tried rtv holding it on the block. Both ended up getting scuffed. When you try to weasel the assembly back into place, it's hard to rotate it around the crossmember without scuffing the...
I've replaced my oil cooler seals three times back in 2015 and 2016 because I had that oil-in-coolant issue. So I'm a bit of an unwilling expert at extracting them from the van engine bay.
The process is pretty easy if that RV has the same crossmember as my van. It will not just pull off the...
Use a shut-off valve to kill the supply of coolant to the heater core. My IDI van always blew warm AC until I eliminated the heat sink created by the heatercore. I basically turn off my heater core in April, and open the valve in September.
Your wife is upset cuz you took $300 to buy a $3000 car (once fixed up)? Tell her to chill. I guarantee you she's spent more on coffee in the last year than you spent on that tdi
Back ages ago in my youth, I wouldn't drill holes in my cars either. I even used a similar method of mounting switches/radio/gauges with acrylic and polycarbonate sheets.
The problem was, that dark acrylic reflected so much light. If the sun was at the right angle, I would be blinded while...
I downloaded your photo and adjusted the brightness/contrast to see I could get a better look at the block. I think the big problem is there is 1/4" thick of gunk on the block, obstructing any origin point. It might be the HG, but hard to tell under all that stuff.
Get a putty knife and...
I read some study that said the biggest consideration a woman makes when buying a new automobile was the cupholders. Not the engine, performance, fuel economy, horsepower, towing capacity, or safety. The cupholders.
Wife: [cranky voice] "You have to get rid of that crappy SUV that doesn't even have satellite radio or cupholders!"
Husband: sigh. "Yeah, I'll post it online. Nevermind all these emails and texts from people interested in this Centurion, I just don't think there is any interest in this old...
Here is my list of what I did to my IDI to get it up around 20mpg reliably. http://www.nickpisca.com/diesel/turbo/the-great-big-list-of-eco-mods-for-6-9-and-7-3-idi-vehicles/
Honestly, the fastest way to get 2-4mpg with the least amount of work was the HD TC and oversized LRR tires.
They do point up, but not too extreme. I'd say it's about ten degrees upwards from horizontal. I have two digital gauges (IP fuel inlet temp and third fuel tank percentage) and one analog gauge (EGT) and don't have any trouble seeing the readings.
In addition to cutting and heating the pod...
Mine has always failed ever since I first got my first IDI. I've just ignored it. You can pull the wire from the connector, or you can pull the wire from the temp sensor switch on the head. Both will disable the CHIS.

On my 1988 van, I have a triple pillar pod and a triple over head pod.
The overhead one was easy: http://www.nickpisca.com/diesel/fuel-system/new-overhead-gauge-pod/
but the pillar was a PITA. I just went through my old purchases, and I bought a "Universal Triple Gauge A Pillar Pod GS-U3" in...
