    Starter drama. This can happen to anyone with a diesel. Or maybe just me.

    That whole experience alone, is worth the cost and work of installing an electric fuel pump in tandem with the mechanical. Even if the efp doesn't do much of anything else, if it saves you from that, it's worth it.

    Yesterday. Swapped winter tires out for summer tires. Yeah, big deal. But it took me all day, and left me in a lot of back and hip pain.

    If you 'removed every wire from the relay on the fender, and it still does it'.... Are you sure you were working with the starter relay? On an 85, I believe the glow plug relay sits in the same vicinity, and looks like the starter solenoid. Could you take some pics for us?

    Let's do this by testing the easiest things first, without assuming what the problem is. Pull the small wire that comes from the ignition switch, off of the starter solenoid that is on the fender.     I keep mine at 1500 to 1800, and do so quite easily. I do so, for fuel mileage. It goes plenty fast enough. And it has plenty of power. Even with the weight equivalent of my camry, setting in the bed of the truck.

    I hauled water from town, in my brand new water tank! And I bought the straps from TSC, as well! They had a bunch. If I'd had more money, I would have bought as many as I could. (I bought 4 of them.) All this is temporarily set up. The duct tape was just to hold the straps while I positioned...

    Better make it two or three layers of tarp between the rubber mat and the sheet. One tarp isn't likely to make a difference. Because the tarp will be "griptioned' by both the mat and the sheet. Put down two or more tarps and the tarps at least stand SOME chance of slipping on each other...

    A word about dieselkleen

    I always use dieselkleen. Last fill up, I put in a pint of 2 cycle oil. After about 3 miles, it started running quieter and smoother. Hate to think what I was doing to the IP and engine without it.
