    Internal Differences - ZF5 S-42 and S-47?

Fellas - I understand the S42 is rated for 420 ft/lbs and the S47 is rated for 470 ft/lbs, but does anyone know what the internal differences are? Are all internal parts interchangeable? Did a search and didn't find the info that I was looking for. Reason I ask - I just disassembled the 1996...

Looking for Advice on a 7.3 IDI Turbo Build

Thanks for all the input. I just finished the Sky Offroad Design 4x4 conversion for the truck with reverse shackle kit and Super Duty springs. Dana 60 cleaned and painted and bolted in but still have to finish refreshing king pins and assembly. Will rebuild the ZF-5 and 1356 next and then...

Looking for Advice on a 7.3 IDI Turbo Build

Doesn't appear to be the correct one. I'm looking for IDI turbo pistons; these have a piston pin diameter of 1.3086". The NA motors had a diameter of 1.1104". This piston is listed at .927".

Looking for Advice on a 7.3 IDI Turbo Build

How difficult is it to find forged 7.3 IDI turbo pistons, standard bore?

7.3 IDI Block - Is It Turbo Block? Is at 4.150" (.040) - Too Much???

I ended up scrapping the .040 block. I picked up a running 7.3 with low miles (said to be 31k) from a 1988 F350 4x4 RC - truck was used for spreading salt and pushing snow and got to be too rusty to use. Anyone know where I can find some standard bore turbo pistons?

Sad day and clutch (I thought...)

That's what I used to pull my ZF5. Good piece of gear. You can often find them on FB Marketplace, used once, for a reasonable price.

Running new motor oil vs waste motor oil?

I don't know if I would put much stock in how it smells. Just siphon some out from the bottom of the tank. If it's used, there will be plenty of solids that have settled.

7.3 IDI Block - Is It Turbo Block? Is at 4.150" (.040) - Too Much???

I know Ford anodized the tops of the pistons in the IDI turbo motor. I wonder if there's an updated/superior coating that would help the pistons live longer.

7.3 IDI Block - Is It Turbo Block? Is at 4.150" (.040) - Too Much???

One piston looks like it ate the end of a glow plug, too.

7.3 IDI Block - Is It Turbo Block? Is at 4.150" (.040) - Too Much???

Got pistons cleaned up today - every single one is cracked on the crown - and they are name brand, too - Mahle. Pics to follow.

what goes into pulling an idi?

Lots of good comments. I removed the core support and left the hood on, pulled the engine only. I wouldn't want to pull engine + transmission + transfer case. If the truck is rusty, plan to use a sawzall at times and double the amount of time needed to pull it. If you click on the link in my...

7.3 IDI Block - Is It Turbo Block? Is at 4.150" (.040) - Too Much???

Hi David - Yes, I found my way here last month, and I'm glad I did. I have not measured the bores on the 6.9 but I will probably do so today. I agree that the 6.9 appears to be a viable alternative; certainly preferable to an .040 7.3. Having said that, I'm supposed to check out a...

7.3 IDI Block - Is It Turbo Block? Is at 4.150" (.040) - Too Much???

Don't need a video, the story is good enough! Given as much time as it takes to remove and install one of these buggers, I'm not inclined to run it. Thanks!

7.3 IDI Block - Is It Turbo Block? Is at 4.150" (.040) - Too Much???

Good question. I doubt a re-manufacturer would use custom pistons, but maybe so?

7.3 IDI Block - Is It Turbo Block? Is at 4.150" (.040) - Too Much???

My 7.3 IDI turbo (with factory Garrett setup) came out of a '94 cab and chassis truck and I have zero history on it. It was turning over but not running. I got it apart and figured out it was a reman -- the rods have been stamped, but some knucklehead stamped two rods #7 and there's no #6. In...

Looking for Advice on a 7.3 IDI Turbo Build

I was watching some R&D IDI video on YouTube and he mentioned using cylinder heads that had an acceptable amount of cracking or words to that effect. Where does these heads normally crack and what would be considered an acceptable amount? Thanks

Looking for Advice on a 7.3 IDI Turbo Build

    Sounds very similar to mine, but I'm ditching my 6.9 for a 7.3 IDI-T and I have a ZF-5.

Looking for Advice on a 7.3 IDI Turbo Build

Disassembled the engine this weekend. It had a sticker on the valve cover indicating that it had been dyno tested and made 200 hp at 3,000 rpm. Pretty sure that was from when it was remanufactured. Some knucklehead broke off a flexplate bolt in the crank flange and didn't bother to fix...

Checking for Cavitation on 7.3 IDI-T Block - Sonic Test?

Thanks for the input, Bart. I'll have it torn down soon, so I'll check the cylinder walls for evidence of leaks. Scott

Checking for Cavitation on 7.3 IDI-T Block - Sonic Test?

I have a 1994 7.3 IDI turbo that I bought to build and install in my '87 F350 DRW CCLB. The engine was turning over, but not running when I bought it. No previous history. Do not know how many miles it has. If the bores check out ok on taper, I plan to do a garage rebuild (new rings...

Are 6.9 Connecting Rods Stamped from Factory With ID Numbers/Letters on Rods and Caps?

Just pulled the oil pan off my '87 6.9 and noted that the con rods and caps were stamped with letters - X, L, Y, etc., to identify them. This is something that I've normally seen machine shops do, but suppose this could have been done at the factory, too. Can anyone confirm/deny whether these...

Looking for Advice on a 7.3 IDI Turbo Build

Do you need to do a sonic test of the 7.3 cylinders before boring? Just wondering how you address the possibility that there was some damage due to cavitation at some point.

Looking for Advice on a 7.3 IDI Turbo Build

Are you talking 500 ft/lbs at the crank or to the wheels? If it's to the wheels, that sounds good. On the drop-in turbo, that's interesting. Price doesn't seem to be outrageous for the Stage 1 at $1,200 -...
