    ZF5 Question

There is a magnet in the case itself, not the drain plug. It’s a regular magnet, not a super strong rare earth magnet like your magnet on a stick. I bet you passed over the magnet in the case with your strong magnet and took all the stuff that was stuck to it.

    ZFS542 Spring?

This was my situation 100%. I have a great running truck now, but wow it was a bumpy road to get there.

    Ok lets beat this horse

To answer OP, when I needed a pump a year or two ago neither Russ or Justin had them in stock. I checked daily for a month or two until I got to where I couldn’t wait anymore. I searched for recommendations among the GM 6.2 crowd because they also use DB2 pumps, and ended up using badger diesel...

    Ok lets beat this horse

When I clicked on this thread I was 100% expecting it to be about facet pumps due to this recurring image lol

    ZFS542 Spring?

You know what though, if it was sitting on top of the transmission it probably is a detent spring. If the freeze plug worked its way out, the spring could pop out and end up right there. In this picture you can see where the three detent covers are, with one cover removed so you can see the...

    ZFS542 Spring?

I had the same thought xolatem did, that looks like the 5-R interlock spring.

    ANTI SEIZE on INJECTOR LINES?

Definitely read the reviews on those $40 Amazon injector line sets before you order one. Seemed like everyone had cracked lines within a week or two. Makes me wonder if those are just steel brake line material rather than the thicker stuff our injector lines are supposed to be made of.

    1988 IDI Wheel -tire question

I’ve come across many sets of cool 16.5” rims for cheap and came to the same conclusion as others: tires are unobtanium in that size. I have an 89 f-250 with 18” rims and 35” tires, they do rub the leaf springs on full lock. I also think it sits too low without a lift kit. I’ll fix both of...

So much for my new used engine… lifters are all destroyed… how??

That’s really a bummer. Did he say how long it’s been since this engine last ran?

    Showerhead filter alternative?

This is the one I bought for my side tank on my 89 about two years ago: https://a.co/d/h1dsa1Y I transferred the sender piece onto the existing metal plate attached to my pickup tube. I seem to remember some modification was required, but overall it was easy and has worked great so far...

    Power Steering Pump

When I went to hydroboost I bought the hydroboost unit, a new PS pump, and all the hoses on Rock Auto. I just bought parts for an F-super duty of the same year. I also bought a new bigger brake master cylinder that I never got around to installing, and I may never install it based on what Russ...

    Power Steering Pump

Gandalf, a telltale sign for me that my brake shoes had the incorrect casting was that my e-brake was weak and wouldn’t hold on an incline, even though the shoes were adjusted properly. You might want to find a hill to park on and see if the e-brake alone can hold the truck without rolling in...

ZF with 1356 case install in one shot?

I say split them as well. It can be really difficult to get the zf-5 lined up perfectly with the engine so the input shaft slides into place. You’ll need to wiggle it around and maneuver it, and the transfer case will bump into stuff and limit your movement. I actually recommend removing the...

    V-belt tension

I recently got my hands on a service manual. Here’s the page on v-belts: It says that the belt should have 1/2” - 3/4” of deflection at the widest gap.

    Freeze plug tool

Justin from R&D IDI Performance uses a modified hole saw to convert the block from the disc-style freeze plugs to the cup-style kind that can be driven in with a socket or anything. Here’s the video where he goes over the process if you want to go that route: (Freeze plug stuff starts right at...

    IDI marine engine questions

I haven’t dug into it yet since the initial inspection, but I’ll definitely check the piston part numbers to verify whether I can use them. I did see the boat and it was a single engine center console, hopefully that means the engine spins the right direction.

    Showerhead filter alternative?

I’m 90% certain that the ohms range on the sender/gauge is different on the bullnose trucks than it is on the brick/aero nose ones. I think the 10-73 ohms is only for the earlier trucks

    IDI marine engine questions

I went and picked it up today, and there’s good news and bad news. The good: - The guy had the heads gone through and resurfaced before he discovered the cracked and irreplaceable exhaust manifold, so I have a good set of heads! - I got a parts manual for the marine IDI engines, so I can...

    Fresh build, smoke, stumped

That is interesting about the required fuel pressure at the pump. The Stanadyne DB2 manual calls for “greater than zero” to 5 psi for a stock pump, but I know the govt manuals for a HMMWV call for 4-8psi like Justin does.

    IDI marine engine questions

I reached out to the guy and if all goes well I’ll go pick it up this weekend. I’ll check any part number I find to see how they cross reference.

That’s what I’m thinking too. This is a really good point, I will try to find out. Thanks for the good points guys, I’m leaning towards picking it up.

    IDI marine engine questions

I came across a 7.3 IDI boat engine locally for $250. The guy is selling it because the water-cooled exhaust manifold cracked and apparently they are impossible to find. I’m interested in building an engine to drop in my truck, but I want to ask the group whether it would be a mistake to pick a...

“Need help using my DTI 3300s timing meter on my 6.9 IDI.”

The only way I got the probe to work was to jam it all the way in until it touched the balancer. When I let go it sprung back a tiny bit so it wasn’t actually touching, but ended up as close as possible.

    Return line question

I forgot to add that there are other olive seals in the fuel system, so you might as well replace them all. Russ (Russrepair.com) includes them in his return line kit, but I can’t remember if he sells them separately as well. I bought viton ones when I did it instead of standard rubber. Look up...

    Return line question

That fitting is different depending on the year of your truck. If it has a steel hard line leading from the IP return to that fitting, you will have a rubber “olive” seal that is supposed to seal the connection. There’s a good chance that olive seal is cracked and old (mine was hard as a rock...
