Alright, what is the best battery for extremely cold climates.

Here is how I made a pair of group 31s fit into my 94. No lowering required, just need to remove the lip off of the inside of the battery trays. As you can see the group 31s stick over about 1.5 inches. I don't really need the mudflap covering the positive posts, but I just felt better with...

Alright, what is the best battery for extremely cold climates.

I did some minor modifications to my battery boxes and made hold downs, I'll post some pictures. I used a piece of mudflap as a fail safe to keep the hood from hitting the + post. Pretty simple really - an afternoon with a grinder and drill and they fit nice. When I was pricing batteries, I...

Alright, what is the best battery for extremely cold climates.

Group 31 batteries. I have interstates. They are big, and need some modification of the battery trays to fit. They'll give you the most cold cranking amps, and the most reserve capacity. Don't forget you need good battery cables as well. That said, even -20F is darn cold for any diesel to...

How not to do an engine swap (my 12 valve Cummins into 97 F-350 thread)

Now for some pictures of these beauties. They bolted to the factory isolators for the 460. Passenger side I guess this corner was in the way of something The drivers side is worse The power steering pump couldn’t be removed with the motor mount in. As...

How not to do an engine swap (my 12 valve Cummins into 97 F-350 thread)

Well its been a long time since I posted. I’ve been working pretty steadily on it, but the progress sure seems slow. I spent a while completely cleaning the block, then stripping all the paint off everything in preparation to re-paint it. I used POR-15 engine paint, which I brushed on as...

Not quite a 911, but close.

Are your glow plugs manually controlled or is the controller working them? If controller, how long are they on for? If they're not on long enough, like 6-8 seconds, that could be the problem, especially if a few are dead. Are you getting a steady stream of thick smoke every time you crank...

    '87 6.9 clutch fan removal

It's left hand thread, so it comes off clockwise. If memory serves its a 1 7/8" nut, you can buy a wrench, make one out of some 1/4" steel, use an impact hammer and chisel, pipe wrench, or rent a tool at an auto parts store. There are a fair number of threads discussing various ways to get it...

New Champion Radiator- Does not seem to be cooling as well as the stock?

Do you have a 2 row or 3 row radiator. I switched from a 4 row copper/brass to a 2 row champion aluminum and had a similar experience as you are. My original radiator cooled fine, but started leaking. The new radiator barely kept it cool enough on grades in summer temps with 2000 lbs behind it...

    Price My Truck to sell

I think $2750 is a good starting point. If no one calls in two weeks you'll know you're pretty high. In my market you wouldn't have too much trouble getting that.

Buying a 7.3 idi Tommorw hopefully

Ask to cold start it, and feel the engine to see if its been warmed up before you start it. Look in The radiator to check for nasty coolant, or oil mixed with coolant. See how it starts, if it has some trouble it's likely something simple like glow plugs, gp relay, air intrusion, or worn...

Thinking about Clutch replacement before its needed.

My 94 had a 12" clutch. The solid flywheel isn't a failure point and is a lot cheaper than the dual mass, but does make the trans noisy at low RPM. Honestly, I wouldn't replace it unless you think it's about done or you're going on a long trip towing heavy. Who knows, it could have 100k left...

    fuel pressure question

When I had my IDI, I had my fuel pressure gauge plumbed into the line that goes from the fuel filter to the IP. I never saw more than 4-5 psi (only saw that when I was off the throttle, using the engine to slow down), usually it was right about 3. Sometimes, it would run at 0, or somewhere...

PSA: did you know your factory radiator is worth $70??

The parts yard that opened recently here, was charging $40 with a $20 core for any radiator. I got a nice 4 row one for my truck, figuring I won't be out anything if it turns out to be leaky. They even had some big trucks on the yard - I was tempted to pull one of those radiators just to scrap...

    Wheel changeover year

A lot of the dodge wheels won't fit over the hub of a sterling 10.25. And if its hub piloted, you pretty much need a ford wheel.

    Newbie diesel owner need help/advice/do's & dont's!

You're going to want 4.10s, or even lower. I like them in my truck empty, I can't imagine pulling too much with 3.55s. For a truck that only pulls its a no brainer. Used axles are cheap, I'd swap one in there quick.

seen ice road truckers tonight have a dvr question

Its always bugged me that our lift pumps don't have a manual primer. I like a pump that is driven by a diesel engine, not a little electric motor. My 85 Mercedes had one, which made priming after a filter change or opening up the lines a breeze. Fortunately, the little 6 banger going in my 97...

    body lift

If I were to do it again I wouldn't do more than a 2". I'm doing a 1 or 1.5" on my 97 dually. 3" is enough that its a little hard to get in and out of, but the stance is pretty nice. I bought a kit on ebay, they're still available, which came with a steering shaft extension, works perfect...

    Another starting issue

Just pay attention when pulling it off and put it back the same. Not too difficult, really, but the consequences can be significant (but not bad if you've got your plywood handy). Make sure you have a good electrical signal going to it, because you may have an electrical issue, not a solenoid...

    general brake question

When you're not pressing the pedal, fluid can travel freely between the brake lines and master cylinder reservoir. The reservoir has a maximum as well as minimum fill line, to give room I'd imagine for any thermal expansion.

    I Got a Thinky Missing...

I bought some kind of 1/2" semi flexible plastic pipe at lowes for mine. Cut to length, cut a slit lengthwise, and slip it over. Only tool needed was a knife. I still have all but 2" of the 4' I bought so I could send you a couple. I figured they wouldn't last long, but its been 3+ years now.

    new glow plugs

Go for it. Most meters you need to subtract the resistance shown with the leads touching (well, all of hem, except some compensate and show zero). Your plugs are not reading open, really high (more than 5 ohms), or much different than each other; so they're good. And they say beru.

    Need expert advice....looking to purchase?

The Good: Low miles for a 7.3 diesel Mileage means very little with how much age these trucks have on them. Maintenance is what is important. It could have 50k on it and need a complete rebuild or have 250k and be in fine shape. Has off road tires with kevlar in sidewalls with plenty of...
