So what did you do with your truck today?

In the really old stick welders I have seen, the crank physically moves either the primary coil with respect to the secondary, or moves part of the core creating a magnetic shunt (can't recall, it's been a long time). But either way, it ends up with a continuously variable adjustment with no...

Shift boot for my '93 IDI with ZF5?

Thanks, found a -BA from Quirk Parts and ordered it. Cheaper than Amazon even with today's inflated shipping rates :)

So what did you do with your truck today?

Yes, "for a limited time only". Check with your local restaurant... I bought a bagful of small components, a really sad Heath HW-12 singlebander that had been "hammed". I knew it would go for scrap so I got it for $10 :) And a guy GAVE me a GR 2220 "Bug Hound" (PC board fault tracer).

Shift boot for my '93 IDI with ZF5?

There was a small hole in my ZF5's shift boot. Recently a rodent decided to enlarge it. Now it's about 2" across and surprisingly loud noises (gears and engine) come into the cab through that opening at highway speed. The obvious solution is to replace it :) I thought this one would fit, but...

So what did you do with your truck today?

Today I drove 110 miles to Springfield, to return an unused roll of rubber roofing to Menard's, go to a hamfest, eat unlimited shrimp at Red Lobster, and drive 110 miles home. In the morning (temp around 70) it would make 11-12 psi boost with the wastegate tied shut. Coming home (more like 90)...

    2 speed rear axle

I put a Spicer 5831B brownie in my '65 F-350 (caution: not an IDI) ;) because it was the only suitable one I found at a reasonable price. Trans is an NP435 with 6.67, 3.34, 1.66 and direct. The brownie has 2.35, direct, 0.85 gears and the rear is the stock 4.88 dually with 235/85-16 tires. In...

Borg Warner 1356 Transfer Case Rebuild

What's everyone's favorite goop for sealing the two case halves together? Anaerobic gasket sealer like Permatex 51817, or just good ol' Ultra Black RTV? :popcorn There's even a Green (tube) RTV now for gear oil, but the 1356 uses ATF anyway...

Borg Warner 1356 Transfer Case Rebuild

I rebuilt my 1356 TC a few years ago... but now it's seeping from the parting line of the case halves. Guess I didn't use enough of the recommended sealant, or maybe the wrong one. Also there's a tiny hairline crack in the drain plug boss from some gorilla overtightening it in previous years. I...

Lower oil pressure with new turbo?

Update: as noted in the "So what did you do with your truck today?" thread, I replumbed the oil lines so the gauge sender is the only device on the top gallery port, and the turbo is fed from the left gallery. Gauge readings are now normal and stay on-scale :)

Wiring Conundrum(s) II. : Brake Lights and Oil Pressure

That same sender was used on nearly every Ford since sometime in the late 80's, I think. Although there is a gauge, it can only read zero or mid-scale because there is a resistor in the dash cluster (20 ohms, IIRC) in series with the lead to the sender. Now if your dash is set up for the...

So what did you do with your truck today?

Replumbed the turbo oil feed and sender today. Somewhat of a PITA due to the cramped locations... The turbo bushings are now fed directly from the left side gallery port through 36" of #4 Teflon braided steel line, and I also eliminated another potential source of leaks (the casting and its...

So what did you do with your truck today?

Today I wanted to apply a few psi of air to the turbo system and look for leaks... unfortunately I could not locate a stopper big enough for the ID of the turbo inlet (2-1/2") or the tailpipe (2-3/4"). So I just looked through my fittings drawer to find enough pieces to move the turbo oil feed...

Lower oil pressure with new turbo?

oh yeah, I'm acquainted with URO parts. :flipa Rarely if ever will I buy that brand, and then only if it's easy to replace and non-critical. Here is a brand-new valley pan that I installed on one of my BMW M62 V8's to fix a slow coolant seep from the built-in gasket... by the next morning it...

So what did you do with your truck today?

It may indeed ;) That one looks easier to get to. Anyhow I messaged with Wes this evening about the low boost, and his advice is to pressurize and use soap bubbles. Will do that when I have time.

So it is possible to remove the turbo from the up-pipe flange without disconnecting anything else? One of the four nuts looks really difficult to get a wrench on...

So what did you do with your truck today?

I reinstalled the airbox. The vacuum indicator I had installed on the airbox was finally showing a little restriction, so I decided to replace the air filter even though it didn't look that dirty. I discovered that the filter I had on the shelf (in an STP box) was actually the K&N that came...

Lower oil pressure with new turbo?

My no-name Chinese turbo worked great out of the box too! Until it started introducing the impeller to the housing at random intervals... I don't think it lasted even 4K miles of light use.

Lower oil pressure with new turbo?

Doesn't surprise me, their machining tolerances are hit-or-miss a lot of the time. But mine is fresh from CDD and I expect it's "right" the first time :)

So what did you do with your truck today?

Funny you should mention that... when I first installed the factory turbo setup, I somehow got hold of the wrong seal (which was for a Holley 4-barrel carburetor to air cleaner, not the IDI intake-snail). Once I discovered and fixed that, boost went up at least a couple psi even with the old...

    Heater core shutoff

Sorry I couldn't find a part number but it looks like you've got a good one ;) yes, it definitely made a difference on Max A/C. I think this is the one I got (just make sure whichever you use defaults to open, and closes with vacuum applied!)...

So what did you do with your truck today?

Took the truck for a spin on the highway... no audible exhaust leaks, no sign of oil (intake) leaks on the compressor side, but it would only make 6.5 psi with moderate smoke. Figured the wastegate was starting to open, so I wired it shut and tried again. 8 psi max, light-to-moderate gray haze...
