    Cheap pyrometer

Looks like I got my money's worth (or not). The probe appears to be defective. It does have continuity, about 13 ohms which is in the ballpark, and the end is not touching the wall of the wye (first two things I checked)! But the output signal is a very slowly drifting-upwards level of 1.5 to...

So what did you do with your truck today?

Shakedown run with the "new" turbo today. Fired it up, with air intake cutoff tool (a short piece of 1x6) in hand. Idled perfectly - except there was diesel dripping from the valley pan drain at an impressive rate. Didn't take me long to figure out the only thing back there I'd messed with...

    Firewall insulation questions

In the engine compartment there is a black insulating pad attached to the firewall. What's it made of and can it withstand heat? Now that I added the turbo, both the up- and downpipes are quite close to it. Also it's loose in a couple of places (also causing it to be closer to hot parts) and...

Need help connecting Banks pipe to 3" exhaust

Yep, I'm aware of that... still I prefer to hook up the exhaust so the hot gases go where they are supposed to (and be quieter so I can hear other noises that may indicate trouble). My NA air cleaner had the snorkel missing, but stock soup bowl. I never hear any intake noise over the IDI and...

So what did you do with your truck today?

Finally finished installing the factory turbo, in 20F weather :) I got tired of trying to put the steel oil line on with excessively tight olives so I found enough pieces in the junk box and made a Teflon braided steel line! Also installed one of Justin (R&D)'s glow plug controller relocation...

Need help connecting Banks pipe to 3" exhaust

Got an 18" piece of 3" flex tubing from Summit (labeled "Diesel Tech" or something)... it turned out to be 3" ID, not OD, but that worked out great. I slid the far end onto the tailpipe (snug fit), then worked it onto the OD of the Banks downpipe (a bit looser), and just left it there! Took 5...

    24 volt starer

Don't forget if you're taking 12 volts for lighting & heating loads off the center tap ("bottom" battery to ground), but charging both batteries in series, the batteries will not charge equally...

Driving down the intestate and she just died.

I may have messed mine up on the turbo oil line... thought they went inside the block fitting, then the flared end of the line butted up to them  But then I saw a pic with the olive slid over the flared end of the line, then stuff it in the fitting and tighten down? Mine did not look...

Solidstate GP controler, cold start system

No, you're not hurting anything. It's a popular location for serviceability and access to use a switch from under the hood, too. I would have put mine there when I installed the factory turbo, but the space is already occupied with a Facet 40285 electric lift pump :)

Glow Plug Solutions from Classic Diesel Designs

I missed that error, but you are quite right. If the resistance dropped as they got hotter, the plugs would run away until something burned up!

How much boost on turbo conversion?

I have no idea what kind of shape my pump and injectors are in, or how old they might be. I know the truck starts readily whether hot or cold, and just a trace of black smoke visible in the mirror when pulling a hill. The odo says 188k but it may well have been substituted from another truck...

    glow plug drilling/extraction

I'm assuming the head is on the engine and you'd like it to remain there? :) If so, please be very careful with extractors, especially the "Easy Out" (two lies in one). Can you weld a nut to the stub of the glow plug, then just turn it out?-Flame Thr TWSS

How much boost on turbo conversion?

Thanks, I also have installed a pyro and will keep an eye on it under load. This isn't my first modified turbo engine... but it is my first turbo diesel :) That said, boost isn't really irrelevant as I have (new) head bolts holding my rebuilt heads down, not studs... I have tweaked the...

How much boost on turbo conversion?

I'm about finished putting a factory turbo setup on my '93 7.3 NA. I've done plenty of reading on how much boost is safe and what engine mods are required to support it, so that's not what I am asking  My question is, how much boost should I expect to see on the gauge before turning...

Glow Plug Solutions from Classic Diesel Designs

Very low resistance measurements are more difficult to perform accurately. The average toolbox meter will show several tenths of an ohm on the display with the leads shorted. Oxidation on the wire ends and on the probes, contact pressure, movement during reading, all affect the reading too. When...

Best order to install factory turbo parts?

Turbo is in (gory details in the "So what did you do with your truck" thread)! Now I'm wondering whether to briefly test-run the engine with or without the airbox... it would be easy to spot a major external oil leak and shut it down, also to block off the turbo inlet if there's an (internal)...

Need help connecting Banks pipe to 3" exhaust

Thanks it's OK, your description is fine. That is one of the possibilities I already thought of ;) I just measured the Banks OD at 2.840 which will slide into a 3" (OD) 18 ga and maybe 16 ga pipe. I'll still need a bend though - the end of the Banks is not parallel with the ground or the...

Need help connecting Banks pipe to 3" exhaust

Got it all in yesterday - as I'd posted, quite a struggle since the complete turbo assembly was NOT going in there with the up-pipe bolted to the turbo. Maybe my body mounts are old... Anyhow my Banks 52103 is in place :) When I got the truck it had a straight 3" pipe welded to the Y, in...

So what did you do with your truck today?

Today I got the turbo installed. It took all afternoon, and that's with a helper. This morning I finished modifying the wiring harness to run at the front of the engine instead of a U behind it. Disassembling the exhaust was simple - the old Y-pipe came right off, and I cut the 3"...

So what did you do with your truck today?

Since today (and tomorrow) are forecast to be 50F, I finally started on the turbo installation! :sly The whole afternoon was consumed in prep work... remove the GP controller and oil pressure "sender", redo the fuel return line between banks to go around the front of the intake hat away from...

    ZF5 swap questions

For clarity, you do mean the rotating assembly (crank, rods, pistons, therefore balance) that's in the block is what matters, not the actual block? I thought all the blocks (6.9, 7.3, 7.3 turbo) were the same externally.

    ZF5 swap questions

Luk 07225 in mine. Works great. Does have a little gear rattle at low RPM but considering the diesel noise it's not that bad :) Rock Auto has the best price+shipping, especially when you remember to use their 5% discount code.
