    Remember, the more the cam actuates, the more retarded the timing. So, you want to make it actuate less at first - try rotating the cam a little backwards(top towards the front of the motor), so it happens later and you get more advance down low.

    I'm guessing mainly gas engines? Part if it could be not letting the engine cool down after working it hard, so a bit of oil cooks in the turbo. Cooked oil = not so good. IDIs, well, unless you really try, you are probably going to end up letting the turbo cool down before shutting it off...

    If, say, the rubber grommet in the valley pan leaked, wouldn't that cause the same issue? I did see that on one JY motor I pulled, which evidently had the CDR pulled and left open for a while. Quite a bit of rainwater ended up in the pan due to that.

    I'm going to be the odd one out here - I buy the absolute cheapest kits off Ebay(~$25 range). Lube the O-rings and inside of the caps with wheel bearing grease, slap it on, and you are good to go! The lube used makes so much difference it's not funny.
