    Don't know about being mandatory , but putting a quart or two in is a good ideal , kind of like putting oil in a oil filter before putting in on. Put some in and roll it around to get oil into things , I just would not put so much in that it starts running back out is all.

    My 93 dually had 235 on it when first bought it. Rears would almost rub together when load heavy, and made things tight on the front too. Went back to 215 on it.

    That looks like part of the oil ring, don't think I have ever seen that happen. The pieces are probably part of the piston on the pin side. will be interesting to see what you find. Post pictures.

    I have changed a number of them over the years by myself ,yes they are a pain but doable. Have seen them still start a truck when broken , but not every easy.

    If the key cyl is in good shape , I wonder if the actuator for the switch is not broken . pretty common for those to break on older trucks. Other then that there is just really a lot to go wrong .

    It still keeps things from rusting together, I use it on lug bolts all the time. I am sure it is about as water resist as any grease. I use the gray Permatex stuff, have for years.
